We had the good fortune of connecting with Keta Meggett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keta, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
The end goal for me or where I would like to professionally see my career in the end… Would be for me to see Team Bully Buster Self Defense as an international conglomerate, with millions of women and children gaining confidence through self love and self-defense! I started the company because I noticed that there was a deficit in places for women and children to learn how to protect themselves in a safe clean and fun environment. After being bullied and beat up severely in High School and suffering from PTSD for years, I wanted to change how I felt so I chose to empower myself one step at a time. I started with my spirituality & built a relationship with God. Then I got mental help and started to go to therapy and then I added in overcoming being physical by auditioning to be a Pro-Wrestler on the TV show WOW Superheroes and I booked it! Becoming the character Keta Rush was so empowering and also opened a lot of doors for me. It led me to 10th Planet NOGI Jujitsu and then to Team Victory Muay Thai & Boxing. I competed in both consistently and realized I no longer had issues with being physical and felt so empowered from the inside out and wanted every woman in the whole world to feel how I felt. I also didn’t like that I had to travel to so many different gyms to get what I wanted and I didn’t like how none of the gyms never really felt clean or good. So I created Team Bully Buster Self Defense Studio City. The first gym dedicated to empowering women and children through martial arts specifically Jiujitsu, MuayThai, Boxing and Wrestling. In the end I pray that so many lives are touched by Team Bully Buster, so many people are EMPOWERED and so many people know that value of Self Love & Self Defense… then it will be the End.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Getting to where I am today was definitely not easy but looking back on the journey that led me here… It was a pretty interesting and entertaining ride. After experiencing the shame, guilt and confusion that came with getting bullied and beat up, I was still struggling with my parents divorce and moving cities and schools & missing my brother. There was so much transition that it was almost impossible to feel grounded which left me suffering from depression and I flat out didn’t wanna be here anymore. Facing my depression and dealing with it and really wanting to overcome it is the main factor in my life. I thank God every day that I did not want to be a victim anymore and wanted to be victorious over my situation and I would say that is what sets me apart from most people… It’s my resilience! I never give up, so I can’t loose.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting me from out of town for a week we would have the best time ever! We would visit Venice Beach and Santa Monica! I would take her to Nobu in Malibu to enjoy the sushi and sunset! We would definitely hit up Undefeated to pick up some new sneakers & American rag! I would take her to Abbot Kinney and to have lunch/dinner at Gjelina. We’d have a day at the Wi Spa downtown. We would for sure hit up some plant stores like Greenwood or maybe even the flower mart downtown. Id take her on a hike at Runyon Canyon so she could see the amazing views of Los Angeles and to the Hollywood sign. We would also go to this little spot on Tujunga called Aroma Tea & Coffee or Sweet Butter on Ventura to have a breakfast burrito and a latte. At night we would go to a concert in the park somewhere in this magical city of Los Angeles and then have dinner outside somewhere in old town Pasadena! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out my Fiancé, my Coach, my best friend, and my everything: Coach Rod. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me and you keep me going. Thank you for always believing in me and for supporting me and for wanting to see me shine. That is a priceless feeling and I am filled with gratitude daily because of your presence in my life! I pray that I make you proud every day!
