We had the good fortune of connecting with Khalia Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khalia, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success would be my support system. Just knowing I have people in my corner, that, no matter what.. they will always support me and have my back makes me confident in anything I do. I moved to Los Angeles a year and a half ago. I had an extremely tough first year, but no matter how tough it would get, my support system (parents, family, and friends) would always encourage me to keep going. They always cheer me on, give me my flowers, and are 100% transparent with me. i appreciate that so much. I am also the first in my support system to move away to pursue a creative dream so I think while they are supporting me, I am inspiring them. That right there makes me feel so good, it keeps me going.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a wardrobe stylist/creative director. My career didn’t take off until I moved out of Boston and to LA. By my second week of moving here, I was interning for celebrity stylist, Once I was over being an intern, I took some time off to try and figure out how I was going to make money while doing this. In Los Angeles, word of mouth is everything. Another stylist I met while interning referred me to Jenna (the stylist I work with now), and Jenna reached out to me and we started working… really well together. I became Jenna’s assistant with in the month. That was all fate. But I think that’s how things work in LA, its not forced… as long as you keep working – an opportunity will come up. In this current time, I am working more on my brand as a creative director and model. In the future, I would love to help out artists with their whole look… more than clothes. I invest in myself and my own projects so I am able to build my portfolio. Investing in yourself is not easy, but if you believe in yourself.. why wouldn’t you. The lesson I’ve learned so far is to not give up. Things will get so hard, but as long as you can walk, talk and breathe,.. go for it.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
When my friends are visiting I like to take them to El Matador Beach in Malibu. When. I first moved here, I could not believe there was a place that looked that beautiful in America. For food, I would take them to Yamashiro or Javier’s in Newport Beach (I’m all about ambiance and views and those two places are perfect), also Nobu because we love sushi in Malibu. Seeing that my friends and I are naturally fun people, I think I would take them to places with views… things that will inspire them. I love to drive around Bel-Air and Beverly Hills to look at homes.. it’s one of my favorite past times in LA.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shoutout to the stylist I work with, Jenna Demaio. She is one of the most youngest, driven, hard working women I know. She’s the lead stylist i work with and she is younger than me.. that inspires me. She moved to LA after graduating from school in Arizona, and she basically hit the ground running. She has styled so many people including, Khloe Kardashian, JLO, Hennessy Carolina, Chris Brown and so many more celebrities. She deserves a lot of credit as to my portfolio is building. She took me under her wing and taught me so much and I appreciate that. She is also a very good friend of mine, and she is amazing at that as well. Love you sis!
