We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Gingras and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve just wrapped up my very first round of my online mentorship program The Kim Gingras Experience and I’m on cloud nine! What a joy it is to watch what was once just an idea flourish into something so wonderful and so unifying! Throughout my 15+ year career as a professional dancer, I’ve always had a passion for teaching. As the years passed, I started defining what it was exactly that I enjoyed sharing with others, and what they really looked forward to learning from me. It went beyond movement. I kept being asked similar questions or receiving similar messages such as “How do I get signed to an agency? How can I audition for Beyoncé? How should I brand myself? How do I build meaningful connections with choreographers in the industry?” And the most reoccurring question : “How do I build my self-confidence?” It was becoming very clear to me that it was time to create a program where I could tell ALL. I wanted to build a way to share all the tips, tricks and important tools that have helped me get to where I am today. Being an excellent dancer is a must, but it takes a lot more to have a long and prosper career in dance. I want to help the next generation of dancers be as ready and as confident as ever! The good, the bad, the ugly – It’s important for me to be an open book with my mentees. I want them to learn from my mistakes and I want them to benefit from my wins. This is why I’ve created a 3 month online mentorship programs with a very detailed curriculum on all aspects surrounding dance from writing your resume, to branding yourself on social media, to setting yourself up for financial success. All that I wish I was told as a teenager/young adult wrapped up into one. I truly feel like I’m on my X. It’s an honor getting to support and encourage dancers from all around the world. From Canada, to Russia, to the Philippines, the US and Spain, we can all feel a sense of belonging and support. I really look forward to the second round in 2021.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve love to take my friends to Point Dume for a little beach and ocean (and hopefully a dolphin or two). I love nature and I find it so resourceful. I’m a sucker for Sugarfish and would definitely make sure we squeeze in a dinner there. One of my go-to for drinks would be a fun speak-easy like No Vacancy. It’s an experience, it’s fun and the drinks are wonderful. Ice cream? Yes please! We would have to stop at a Salt n Straw for some yummy Salted Malted Chocolate Cookie Dough ice cream!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m shouting out my entire TRIBE! I’m so lucky to be surrounded by friends who champion me and my ideas on a daily! In particular, I’d like to shoutout my boyfriend Fred St-Gelais aka Covid partner who so lovingly supported my every move as I spent my full days on my computer building my website, newsletter and program from scratch. He has been extremely helpful with helping me translate all of my content in French knowing it was very dear to my heart that this program be perfectly bilingual.
no need, thank you
