We had the good fortune of connecting with Peggy Kelley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Peggy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk to me is trust and courage, the ability to live in the uncertainty which is so true today. Risk equals…What if? My “what ifs” are many…They started here…. What if I sell everything I own and move from Cleveland Ohio to Houston Texas? You start fresh and build a new life… What if I take a job in radio not knowing anything about the media? You work for three top radio stations and learn a new skill that you can use going forward… What if I put a U-Haul on the back of my car and drive to Los Angeles to start again? You learn that your little girl dreams come true…What if I fall in love and it doesn’t work out? You learn about love, and all of the magic it brings…you learn about divorce and the pain that comes with it and most important you learn you are stronger than you think…What if I become successful in the events industry…cater the Emmys… cater the Oscars…actually attend the Oscar’s as a guest? You learn the importance of collaboration and service. What if I start my own business? You learn responsibility for yourself & others and that the road is not always easy but an amazing road that you build brick by brick.. What if there is a pandemic? You learn to keep an open mind & and open heart, help others and learn new skills. Some call is pivot…I call it my next chapter. Risk is my friend and the best partner one can ever have as she will never leave you as long as you are willing to play!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is about making an idea, dream or story come to life in real time. I started reading and painting at 4 yrs old, I think in pictures and see things that other people don’t seem to see. I am most proud of that moment when a couple or organization steps into their celebration and it is more than they could ever imagine. I have been an artist all of my life and found an industry where I can use all of my gifts to serve & support others. The hours are long, the journey has had some huge bumps and learning curves, my teachers have been the best of the best in LA and I am blessed beyond words. I am willing to make mistakes because I am willing to try and fail which is just another word for experience. My success is because I didn’t quit, I believe if quitting is an option you will take it…No back doors…period! I asked for help, I took direction, I invested in my business skills education, I continue to be coached by successful people and I mentor & coach others. Learning doesn’t end as there is always more to explore & do. My mottos are: If I can…You can! Everything’s better together than alone. If you can’t believe…Believe that I believe and we are making it…that is success!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a bit of a museum rat so of course we would go to the Huntington Library and the Getty Villa…while at the Villa we would swing down to Santa Monica to the Pier for fun & games plus a stroll on the beach. Then hop on I 10 to Downtown. I love the magic of Union Station, Disney Hall, the Farmer’s Market…the Flower Mart with GM Floral…the Pantry for home cooking and the stained glass windows of OLA Cathedral. Olvera Street & Chinatown for ethic cuisine and of course Phillipe’s for French Dips too. Being a Midwest gal, I still love to see the Hollywood sign and hike up to sit under it…. Treepeople.org at the top of Mulholland is another favorite hiking location plus a stroll down Rodeo Drive is a must.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow this is a challenging question as there are so many players in this play called my life. I would say on the top of my list would be the many amazing people I met & worked with at The Huntington Library. As their Director of Catering & Events for almost 10 years I “grew up” on the Huntington property as an event designer but also as a woman in the Pasadena community. The Huntington staff & donors were & continue to be inspirational in my life and my catering “family” of over 30 years are all still together today. The Huntington allowed and promoted our creativity & growth and today I am a member, donor and advocate for the institution and the arts. My favorite book is “Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert, it is about creativity and how ideas become reality. Live & virtual events are all about making dreams a reality:))
