We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Kyne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking is what got me as far as I currently am and I believe it is what will continue to carry me forward to the next level. We are constantly tested in life and playing small will reward a person with a mediocre life. As often as I can, I reevaluate my life and try to let go of the things that are holding me back (relationships, jobs, and professional collaborations that no longer serve me) and let them go in order to create space for more expansive blessings. To give a specific example, I had to end a relationship with a person I was deeply in love with because I had clarity on the fact that our values didn’t align. Although it was painful, this newfound space and energy in my life allowed me to become more authentic and invest in my artistic skills and career.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
“Inside the whiteness of the page, sits the story. Kim Kyne is a queen of the compact experience; She has an ability to make small prints feel like an entire relatable mood. The simplicity combined with a creative fluidity and her punchy themes make her one of the most fun to follow artists in the city..” (https://www.babyballou.com/zine/kim-kyne) I excel at infusing minimalism with a childlike playfulness and conveying deep ideas with simple imagery. My magnum opus is a depiction of a girl inside of a trash can. Lots of people have been able to find meaning in it and relate to it. Aside from this piece, I’m very proud of the work that was featured on the cover of the Los Angeles Times (June 2020) that illustrates the denial of white privilege. I’ve gotten to where I am today by learning to love, accept, and forgive myself. Years ago, I struggled with my mental health and substance abuse. Someone who believed in me helped give me the opportunity to fly to Israel to study Judaism. At the time, this path felt alien and far from what I had imagined for myself. Outside of my regular environment, away from habits and comfort, I delved into metaphysics, philosophy, and ethics. It wasn’t an easy ride but these teachings lit me up and showed me a new way of moving thru the world. Not everyone gets handed a golden ticket. I consider myself extremely blessed and know that it is a miracle that I am where I am today. I want the world to know that it doesn’t matter if there is someone else out there doing what you want to do because they can’t do it the way you can. I firmly believe that we are all here to fulfill our purpose and each person has a unique perspective and voice that they should feel compelled to share with the world. This idea is what gives me the confidence to put myself out there and continue to create

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d love to take my bestie to Davey Wayne’s, Mandrake and the inimitable Funky Sole at The Echo for drinking and dancing. For chiller vibes, nothing beats a hike at Runyon, a trip to Malibu, or a picnic at Echo Park lake. Hasiba on Pico has falafel that is just as good as it is in Israel. For art, we’d hit The Broad, The Getty, and the Hammer museum. I love the intimacy of the New Beverly Cinema

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Edward Gallegos is my biggest supporter and my platonic soulmate. We share in each others wins and are there for one another during the losses. I can’t picture my life without talking to him every single day! I appreciate that he is honest with me, helps me in anyway he can, and that our love for each other is consistent and immeasurable. If anyone is seeking a talented, driven NY based creative director, holla at my boy! (https://www.edwardgallegos.com/)
