We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Shapero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristen, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
This question has appeared in my life over and over and over. I always answer this question with these…Am I happy? Can I imagine doing anything else with my life? Does my dedication and art inspire others to live their truth? And if the answer is yes I keep going.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a choreographer, dancer, and creative director. Most of the work I like to create is story driven with a message. I love to make things that the audience can feel and think about. From live shows, to music videos, tv, movies, to teaching class, I always strive to make authentically me art. I don’t want to just make steps and move, I want to make change, tell stories, and make people feel something. I am where I am today because of a lot of dedication, hard work, and staying true to who I am. The road was not easy (and still isn’t) but because dance has my whole heart, it has never been confusing or the undecided. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to let go. Let go of the things you can’t control. Let go of things that aren’t meant for you. Let go of the feeling that you need to conform to society’s expectations of you. Embrace your individuality. Embrace your ability to help others feel. Embrace what you are called to do. I’m not sure if I want the world to know anything specific about me. I would like them to see what I do and be entertained by it, learn something new, smile, cry, feel.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend visited my city we would probably start our day with an adventure. Well first with coffee. 😉 either at Groundwork or Philz. Even though I live in the city, I am always dreaming of the forest, the desert or the mountains. After coffee, I would take them to a getaway to the Angeles forest to hike to a waterfall. Later we would go to Mulholland drive to watch the sunset. Then probably get sushi at one of the million amazing spots. I lived in studio city for 8 years and our favorite spot was Midori. Obviously the hype stops are Sugar Fish and Katsuya if we want to splurge. I am a homebody at heart so we would probably either go see a movie or go back to our place and chill. Hangout play games. Then hopefully every day after that try a new restaurant! We just moved to Korea Town so we would definitely be getting some Korean BBQ and our local coffee shop called Document!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband. He is always my biggest cheerleader. Love you Mikey!
