We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristi McHugh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristi, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Not needing quarters when it’s laundry day. Trust more – You do what you love…. the money will come. 100%
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a comedian – I feel we are a different breed altogether. We are the writer, director, producer of our show. We have our highest highs and our lowest lows while performing the exact same show for a different audience. Ever been reinforced and reprimanded for the exact same action?? Well it’s a mainstay in the comedy world. That is one of the reasons why we all are so beautifully complicated. My own story is unique in that I come from a family of seven. A nun, a cowboy, a teacher, and a dairy farmer, my father broke horses and my mother a nurse’s aid. We did not have heat in our house until I was 11 years old. I had such a passion for standup comedy – I found myself hitchhiking to get to gigs from Oregon to New York. Once I got a ride with a guy who drove the Burger King truck. I smelled like fries for a week – but I got to the gig! We are all a sum of our experiences to date … and that is what I bring on stage. I take the crowd on a ride through my rollercoaster life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Venice Beach Cali…. I would take them on a stroll down the boardwalk…. we would take in all the unique art and eclectic people. Then take a ride up PCH 1 to Nobu in Malibu for some of the best sushi and views on the coast. Sunday morning would be the yoga class I teach (a side gig I LOVE) and then go to the local Farmers market for all the good fruits and veggies to juice! Next stop – wine tasting at Wally’s in Santa Monica and dinner at Forma – my favorite Venice spot for wine, cheese and wild boar ravioli! (not EVERYONE is vegan here). Ending a great day at the beach for sunset and an easy ride down the bike path as a crescendo to the trip.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is always first to my momma! If I did not have those core beliefs/the moral meter and work ethics enstilled in me from day 1, I know I would never have been able to get myself where I am today…. starting with 600 bucks and a red Grand Am 1500 miles from home. She may not have understood why I chose this path, but always asked me if I was happy – and if I was – that’s all that mattered. Shoutout #2 – to John Brooks – an incredible Architect/Engineer, Producer, and Father figure who took me under his wing – I’m still not sure why…. but God granted me an angel out here. From my car crashing to my heart exploding to my debut under the stage lights with Rich Little – John was there to witness and be my cheerleader through it all. Forever grateful for his advice, mentorship, sarcasm, tough love and constant shoulder for those days when I just could not hold it all together. I hope everyone has one of mensches in their life. In times of my biggest growing pains he would say “well what’s the worst that could happen – you are not going to DIE…..” and then I would hop on that plane For my next gig (flying I am deathly afraid of) and say -“ugh – I might!”
