We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristine Locker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristine, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from California. I grew up in a smaller town called La Canada, but I usually tell people I am from Pasadena because more people know where that is. I grew up in an extremely supportive household with parents who instilled values of work ethic, integrity and generosity towards others.
I have always marched to the beat of my own drum. I am the youngest of two and have always been the more talkative and outgoing one between me and my sister.
Growing up, my mom called me “Imelda” after Imelda Marcos. For anyone not familiar with Imelda Marcos, Imelda was the First Lady of the Philippines for over 20 years. In 1986, her husband, Ferdinand Marcos, was forced from office and he and Imelda fled the country. Protestors stormed their palace and in Imelda’s closet, they found over 2,700 pairs of shoes. The moral of that story is that I have always loved fashion and I have always been the go-to for fashion advice for my friends and family. I have styled many a friends for their birthday outfits, college formals, engagement photos and parties, and many other occasions.
What should our readers know about your business?
Locker is a Chrome extension and social shopping platform that allows users to browse, save, share and recommend their favorites across the best brand websites in fashion, beauty & home. Locker was created to eliminate the difficulties of today’s online shopping environment, i.e., too many brands, too many email campaigns & way too many browser tabs open at all times trying to keep track of it all. Shopping is supposed to be fun and social, and reassurance from friends is important in the decision making process when making a purchase. Not only is the Locker extension a convenience tool for the individual user with the ability to “save” favorites, but by using the extension and social platform in conjunction, the user creates the social experience that online shopping has been missing. Each user has a profile on the Locker website where they can follow other users on the platform, organize their saves into collections, i.e., Workout Outfits, Shoes, Skincare, etc. and share those collections with friends or even make a collaborative collection with friends.
Locker is truly the first of its kind. It is the first product in this space that was created for the everyday shopper. With myself as the target user, I am constantly tailoring the product to try and meet the needs of the target audience. What I think makes Locker so interesting is that it is so much more than just a convenience tool. The Locker platform provides a space for those who want to share their favorite products with their friends, family and followers. Being a part of Locker provides brands a new place for brand and product discovery as well as place for consumers to build brand trust. With Locker helping consumers remember about products they like and want to buy, it adds a layer of stickiness for brands that has not existed before.
I am funding the creation of Locker using my personal savings account and with my background being in Commercial Real Estate, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I set out to start my own company. One day I was a Commercial Real Estate Broker and had just received my Certified Commercial Investment Member certification (CCIM) and the next day, I was unemployed and Googling “how to start a company” and “best first steps in starting a startup”. It has not been easy but building a product that is aligned with my passions makes everyday worth it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I grew up in Los Angeles and I love this city so much! For breakfasts and lunches I would take them to Alfred, Coffee Dose, Erewhon, Bluey’s Kitchen, BBCM, Great White, Polo Lounge, and Ivy At The Shore. I would have to take them to at least one dinner at Nobu in Malibu for the view. I would also want to show them Sugarfish, Elephante, Felix Trattoria and my family’s favorite, Ma’s Italian Kitchen. I definitely have a sweet tooth, so I would take them to my favorite plant-based ice cream shop in Santa Monica, Frozen Fruit Co. for a little dessert.
My friends and I are all pretty active so I would take them to walk the Santa Monica Boardwalk, take a workout class at Bunda and hike Runyon Canyon. And I, of course, love shopping. I would want to take them shopping so they could buy items they have saved in their Locker 🛍. I would take them shopping at the Century City Mall, Sunset Plaza, The Grove, and Palisades Village.
We would definitely also spend some time with my family. I would bring them to my parents’ house to relax by the pool and make a fun family meal at home!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, my parents! Growing up I always knew I was loved and supported by my parents. I was constantly told to reach for the stars and that I could do anything I set my mind to. My parents led by example with their work ethic, passion, determination, teamwork and organization. I am forever grateful for my parents’ steadfast presence and their selflessness which made it possible for me to dream big from day one.
I would also love to give a shoutout to Lee Warmack McDonald. Lee was my boss at Goldman Sachs. As a woman in a male dominated industry, Lee showed me how to command respect in the workplace without taking off my heels!
