We had the good fortune of connecting with Suz Born and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Suz, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?

“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” – Mother Teresa

I love these simple words from Mother Teresa. It’s a good reminder that many times what brings us the most joy is investing in others. We all can get stuck in our own agendas and work, our culture pushes comparison and competition daily. This quote helps bring me back to the bigger picture. If I notice I’m experiencing restlessness or discontentment it’s probably because I need to make space to volunteer in someway… because “we belong to each other.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I was trained in psychology and interior design so understanding environments and relational connection inform my painting style. I want to create work that feels embracing and suggests the subject’s interior landscape. I paint florals, feminine forms, and abstract pieces. My rose garden is always inspiring me. The slow and organic rhythm and seasonality of the plant inform my artistic practice and life. I see a deep connection between floral and feminine forms and am alway looking to explore it through art.

I employ mixed media to watercolor techniques, on paper and linen canvas, to achieve layers of translucency, texture, and interest. In figurative work I seeks to create a reflection of an individual’s essence and wants a glimpse of things that are more than skin deep. The subjects have florals and areas of shadow and light developing from within to symbolize their individual growth and journey.

My dream in the next couple of years is to open my home in Los Feliz for Retreat Days/workshops. It will be a time of connection, reflection and creation. I’ll bring in different friends to teach and we’ll have really good food and make beautiful things together.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
