We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyra Roberts & Nijhélle Maxwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyra Roberts & Nijhélle Maxwell, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We started our own business because we no longer wanted to work for anyone. We wanted to work everyday on something we loved (clothing) and are extremely passionate about. We felt like we had the potential to be our own bosses and to call the shots. So far, starting our own business has been the best decision yet.

What should our readers know about your business?
What might set us apart from others is that we truly love what we do. We are proud of the fact that we design, source, cut, and sew all of our pieces ourselves; from every sample, to every finished piece that goes to our Selva babe customers. Every single piece we sell is handmade by us two. We got to where we are today by being driven, no matter how hard things have gotten, we never give up. We’ve learned that everything doesn’t always go according to plan but you have to roll with the punches, brush it off and try again. We want the world to know that anything is truly possible. We would have never thought years ago that we would meet and randomly start a successful business together. Always keep your mind open to new ideas and experiences, it can end up being the best decision of your life and can take you very far.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
New York has sooo many exciting, fun, interesting places. There might be too many to name but we’ll try to name a few. With us being a black-owned business, we absolutely love and support fellow black-owned spots. Peaches restaurant is a great one, BLVD Bistro also has amazing food. People should also visit Brooklyn Bridge park and the Promenade, there’s some great views there, a nice place to watch the sun set.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to give our Shoutout to God. We are women of faith and we wouldn’t have this business without Him.
