We had the good fortune of connecting with Lada Egorova and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lada, why did you pursue a creative career?
It all came from a desire to express myself. As a shy kid I would never open up to adults or even my friends about what was really going on inside my mind or how I was really feeling. I had all these emotions and thoughts that kept bottling inside of me and art has always been a way to express them, let them go, understand them.
Whenever I have a very strong feeling that stays with me for several days or weeks, I give it to a character, I write a script about it or a poem, I make a movie about it. It feels like therapy, it’s a relief.
I always loved writing stories as a kid and imagining worlds, situations, imagining I was someone else, a character with a mission, a desire to live different lives. This is what made me become a screenwriter and a film director.
But I also always was fascinated by the world, I realized that I often noticed things that others did not because I was always observing what was happening around me and gave importance to everything: a growing plant in the cracks of a wall, a person looking sad in the corner of the train, a rabbit run among the field. This is when I started recording these elements, the beauty around me, either through photography or videography.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Russian-French film director, screenwriter, photographer and fashion designer based in Los Angeles.
I’ve always wanted to try new art forms, I started with filmmaking and then it expanded into trying many other art forms.
After studying filmmaking in France, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my artistic career.
As a screenwriter and film director, most of my films and stories present women protagonists who are either running away from a place, looking for a place to call home or returning to a place they have not been back to in a long time.
I have directed and written a dozen short films, from drama to thriller, to sci-fi and action. I am now moving to bigger projects, currently in production of two TV pilots and getting ready to direct my first feature. I am also a photographer who self-published two photography books and enjoys to help individuals and businesses receive beautiful pictures to showcase their talent, capture memories or promote their products.
I also recently launched my streetwear clothing brand No Frontier that focuses on creating pieces that are made of recycled fabrics, made-for-order pieces.
I am still figuring out my identity as an artist and where I want to take my art but I definitely know that I want to keep learning more about other art forms and find a way to incorporate them all together. I refuse to be put in a box, I want to do it all and I want to meet other artists, create together and help other artists create art that matters to them.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Malibu has wonderful views and hikes, for food you can never go wrong by going to Little Tokyo specifically eating at Sushi Enya. Finally, a little walk on Fairfax and Melrose to get inspiration and that creative energy!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I started reading Brian Grazer’s book “A Curious Mind”, it is fascinating and inspires you to be curious about how things work, about other people’s lives, be curious of the world. This is how you live a fascinating and rich life, filled with experiences and stories that you can then use as inspiration for your own life, art, business.
