Meet Larry Ramirez | Recording Engineer/Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Larry Ramirez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Larry, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve been a musician all of my adult life and from an early age I knew that I wanted music to be a career. In my late teens and early twenties, I started to run my band like a business. I seen that we started having success locally so I invested in merchandise and funded our first album and created my own record label. I made sure that money came in was reinvested into merchandise, gear, promo, ETC. Not long after, I decided to quit my job and take the band on the road. I spent the next few years touring and recording bands in my home studio along with continuing to put out my music and other artists. When the digital era in music arrived and people were no longer paying for music I knew I needed something that was more stable where I didn’t have to rely on sales. I knew bands and artists would always need a place to rehearse and record so I took over an existing rehearsal studio over 16 years ago and here I am. I have over 100 bands and artists that come here regularly. I get to watch them grow. I make records and I still occasionally play out live. I took a risk and I did what makes me happy.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a recording and rehearsal studio. We offer recording, hourly rehearsals, guitar repair, graphic design, music video production and we have a music store for musical instruments and accessories. I started a record label in my early twenties and ran it out of my garage where I also built a home studio. I spent years honing my craft and navigating my way through an ever changing music industry. It eventually led me to my current commercial location where I have been for 16 years and counting. These days I don’t really operate as a record label much any more since the way people consume music and entirely different. I instead focus on giving bands and artists a place to rehearse and record their music.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a sucker for our local theme parks. My family have been annual pass holders for Universal Studios and Disneyland for years so we are definitely going to all of them. That could easily be a week in itself but I am sure we would squeeze in a Laker game as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I credit my dad for the way I run the business. He owned a Paint and Autobody shop, where I started working at in my early teens. I watched him for years treat people the right way and how in turn they would bring in friends and family members and his clientele base was steady and spanned generations. I carried that same thinking to my clientele. I do my best to give everyone my time, the best deals and I always share my knowledge. My dad also tough me to do repairs around the house early and they has helped tremendously. When you own a business, it helps to be able to do all your maintenance and not have to hire out. A lot of business go under for things like that. He also lent me the money to start my record label when I first started out.
