We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Pavlakovich and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, how does your business help the community?
You’re Just My Type is a non-profit that focuses on the social, political, and emotional challenges that people with Type 1 diabetes encounter everyday.
For the past 5 years, I have been traveling to different parts of the country, and occasionally overseas, to interview and photograph fellow Type 1 diabetics as a way to connect us from around the world. You’re Just My Type also hosts Meet -Ups in different states to provide a community for Type 1s in need of local support.
Lastly, the platform we have created online now gets used to find medical supplies to those in need!
We are currently expanding and about to host the first retreat for young girls with type 1 diabetes focused on mental health, empowerment, and self confidence and I could not be more excited!
And on August 7th we will be hosting our first post pandemic Meet Up in LA. (You can follow @yourejustmytype1) for details!!
Type 1 diabetes is not easy to live with and I love knowing that You’re Just My Type can provide a sense of support and continue to help break down stigmas that come with living with this disease.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
You know, I sat on the idea for this project for years before finally deciding to do something about it. I had let the fear of failing paralyze me.
But taking the risk is the greatest decision I’ve ever made.
As I mentioned previously, I started off photographing every type 1 diabetic I featured online myself. Meeting over 450 individuals who share the same disease as me has been the most powerful and enlightening experience.
But when Covid hit, I had to adapt- You’re Just Type began accepting submissions from people for the first time and photos and stories were being sent in from all over the world. It was amazing to see something so positive in a time when things felt so negative and scary.
It has just been really amazing to get to witness my passion project evolve into a career path and I encourage everyone to take that step out of their comfort zone, because you never know what could happen!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooh ok, I love this question! (Some of these suggestions clearly are affected by Covid 19).
Let me plan this perfect day for you: Start your morning off with one of the most beautiful hikes around here: Sandstone Peak in Malibu. It is long (about 6 miles and 3 hours in time) but holy cow, it is worth it!
As soon as you are done, drive down the road to Neptune’s Net for their famous clam chowder and enjoy your yummy meal at County Line Beach, please stay until sunset for the greatest end to your day.
Be sure to set aside time to check out our amazing museums. The Broad, Hammer and LACMA are a few of my favorites.
Descanso Gardens and The Huntington Library will give you a beautiful nature experience.
If you’re a foodie I highly suggest eating at Salazar, Manuela, Pine and Crane, Hippo, or The Old Place (hidden gem in Malibu).
And if we’re talking bars, check out Tenants of the Trees, La Cuevita or anywhere in the Arts District- Resident is a top choice.
You also may as well plan a weekend trip to Santa Barbara to do some wine tasting and enjoy some more great seafood by the beach!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Firstly, I always have to credit Brandon Stanton who is the mastermind behind Humans of New York (@humansofny). His photoblog is what gave me the concept inspiration behind You’re Just My Type – taking portraits of strangers and asking them the same general questions to bring humanity together.
I feel so lucky to have received support from my friends and family since day one and quite frankly, You’re Just My Type would be nothing without my followers.
