We had the good fortune of connecting with Leanna Lin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leanna, how does your business help the community or world?
Locally ~ Having Leanna Lin’s Wonderland located (and living) in the smaller town of Eagle Rock in Northeast LA, my business can really be a part of the NELA community without feeling lost. We can make an impact and build relationships with locals and other small businesses. I’ve also done a lot of community events such as be part of the 2nd Saturdays NELA Gallery Night and started We Heart Eagle Rock Shop Small on Small Business Saturday back in 2011. Another big part is doing fundraising for local non-profits (Home Dog L.A., North Central Shelter, Luxe Paws, Center for the Arts Eagle Rock, and the upcoming Vidiots Foundation)! Globally ~ Via social media and my online shop, I can bring smiles and joy to everyone around the world. People can have access to a fun curated selection of amazing artists, brands, and designers. Virtually, they can still be a part of my Wonderland and bring cuteness to their own homes 🙂
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a gift shop and art gallery called Leanna Lin’s Wonderland in Eagle Rock, Northeast Los Angeles. I opened my doors in August of 2010 and just celebrated my 10 year anniversary. There’s been ups and downs, challenges and changes, especially with technology over the past 10 years. In 2017, I re-branded. My shop had to grow up since my kid customers were also growing up! Things also changed after the elections in 2016. We started to get involved with the important issues such as feminism and equality. Jump forward to 2020 I feel like I’m re-branding again! Because of Covid, I’ve had to pivot my business and focus on my online shop because my brick & mortar had to close for a while. I also started doing livestream shopping events on an APP called Popshop Live. I’m proud to have jumped out of my comfort zone and tried new things. You can now say, that I’m running 3 shops (brick & mortar, online, and virtual livestreams)! We have now broadened our customer base from locally in LA to around the world 🙂
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well … if we weren’t considering Covid … and things were like they were before? And the weather is nice, not too hot 🙂 Day 1: Downtown LA – Little Tokyo and Arts District – wander around into shops, eateries, ice cream, coffee shops, and look at the street art and art galleries Day 2: Hike in Elysian Park, followed by brunch and visiting the little shops in Echo Park, Silverlake, Los Feliz. Then seeing the view from the Observatory in the evening. Day 3: Disneyland! Day 4: Venturing around the shops and eateries in Eagle Rock and Highland Park. I’d also love to walk the campus of Occidental College in Eagle Rock and around and in The Self Realization Center in Mount Washington! Day 5-7: We’d have to do a little getaway to either Palm Springs, Ojai, or Santa Barbara. That would depend on my friend and what vibe they are into! There are so many favorite eateries out and about in Los Angeles, so we would stop at whatever we feel at the time. This would also include some cool bars and places to dance too!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Luis Jaime, for helping me from the beginning with the branding of Leanna Lin’s Wonderland! Without him and his design and business skills, I wouldn’t be here.
