We had the good fortune of connecting with Lesly Lynch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lesly, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always have been an innovator. Being a child, I used to see everything through the lens of possibilities, building tree house even though I didn’t have the proper tools to do so, imagining new stories in my utopian world. I always use my creative power to solve problems, either they are day to day hustles, work related or more grounded challenges. Progress happens when you dream up new and improved way of doing things!

Regarding the creation of my business, Studio Space Cowboys, let’s go back in 2020. It’s quarantine, I’m in french countryside, it’s perfect time for introspection but my attention is also largely focused on analyzing the system around me. Based on recent challenges I went through as an independent film director, as an entrepreneur I felt the need to create something disruptive in the film production. Something fresh, modern, that would represent the world that I actually live in.

It was really organic, I wanted to try something new. I partnered with Anaïs Ohresser, strong of ten years experience in international business and amazing at building community of talented people with good heart. At first, during the creative brainstorm process, I was drawing ideas all around and then we went for a very business-oriented approach. I supported my analysis reading specialized press, meeting with a lot of industry experts and expending my spectrum of research to other verticals in business from which I could learn from to disrupt this one. Anaïs focused on the critical business success factors to structure the company and once the business plan was done, we succeeded to raise the necessary fundings to found the company.

Flying back to the US, we officially launched the company and Studio Space Cowboys came to life. A decentralized creative studio and innovative production company based in NY, LA & the Metaverse. It’s a home for talents; focused on their needs. We want to elevate. To empower people. We want to foster creativity while providing a sustainable living for artists. So we shape relationships with our clients and collaborators where our creatives are at the center. We also initiate a new type of partnership to develop young creatives with larger production company that are leaders in the industry. When fresh approach and bold expertise can meet, it creates a bigger impact. All that is possible with a transparent process and a clear communication. At the moment, we focus on commercials, music videos, narrative and experimental film. In parallel, Julie Réali, Head of studio, amazing film director and Ad-Tech expert, is developing geniune Web 3.0 projects to enlarge spaces for communities around art and technology.

We are breaking the rules and opening the frontiers of storytelling. Imagine a global think-tank of gifted creatives, cross-discipline experts, united all together to pursue visual excellence in an inclusive and disruptive way. So naturally everyday just become a new playground of opportunities. We are aligned on our main goals, we want to do business that does good: to ourself and to the outside. It nourished a positive environment based on curiosity. Being queer and franco-cameroonian, I had to learn to live outside the box and defy the system, so it’s in our company DNA to cultivate ideas that shape culture and change perspectives through art, film and technology. We are organic in our shape and morphing as we evolve.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others? We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others.

Space Cowboys is a safe house for the thinkers of tomorrow. A production company with a decentralized approach and a shared decision-making power. By celebrating creatives and innovators coming from plural social backgrounds across the world, we have our fingers on the pulse of culture to create content that matters. That makes us step into the future confidently… and most of all, give us an extremely rich personal experience. Because at the end, that’s what life is about.

What you are most proud of or excited about?

We have recently released an experimental short film ‘Forged In chaos’ that Anaïs produced, that I’m really proud of because it represents what’s possible when you reunite forces around talents. Directed by Patricia Gloum, a long time creative partner and very good friend, the film portrays a relationship between two queer dancers, Robert Jamie Mason & Josiah Martinez-Wade, part of the NYC Ballroom scene. The form brings poetry, voguing and digital art in one piece. The project had a really positive reception because it’s authentic, poetic and freshly modern. Anaïs advocated for the film and our audience got wider after being selected by Vimeo Staff Pick and Director’s Library. In collaboration with Patricia’s company Braw Haus, a web 3.0 agency, we developed NFT from the project, so we could extend its influence into the Metaverse.

How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
We enter the game as outsider, learning directly on the field and that’s been a very exciting challenge. As I was discovering the commercial world as a director, in parallel, I was creating new opportunities for my business. Based on those experiences, we design a nurishing work environment for directors to evolve. Once you are able to show a quality of work that represents you enough, you can access to a certain network and if you have the right offer and the positive attitude, if you are true and authentic, things come along. Not without fighting for it, of course it’s a lot of hard work and self-improvement. So we shape directors to get there and attracts the right opportunity for them.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?

I personally learn a lot from other’s experiences. I’ve observed. I’ve listened and listen even more. I make time to reflect. I create space to experience. I encourage those values within Space Cowboys community and that’s what makes us stay relevant. We all learn from each others. Change is constant and we are an evolving organism. I’m really proud of what we have accomplished and I’m excited for what’s to come.

What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

I come from countryside, a small village named Saint-Émilien-de-Blain in West of France. As a child, I’ve always dreamt of escaping this place and now, I celebrate my story, because I understand how much power it gave me. It rooted me to a deep authenticity and gratitude toward life. And this is this feeling that I infuse into my company. I want to celebrate all people and stories. I want to share knowledge and nurture positivity as a key to unlock power. It’s more than work, I imagine a place where minds can hopefully thrive while offering them a safe and prolific structure.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s easy to project myself as my best friend from France is coming to LA to celebrate her birthday this August! It’s gonna be her first time in US, so I want to make it special.

Echo Park and Silver Lake are my most go to area – I know that’s not a big reveal for those who know LA – but yes I just love to hangout there, so many good restaurants, the views, the nature, and it also feels more human size for me coming from Europe.  I would def want to bring her to diner at Night Market Song on Sunset!

Also another place that a friend make me discover, Buna an Ethiopian cafe, it’s absolutely amazing! The food and the atmosphere. When I’m going to chill at Griffith Park, I always stop at Papillon Bakery to get fresh amazing churros. Recently, Ive been also staying at Eagle Rock for a week and I really loved the area.

Always love the Hills, to hangout at friend’s for sunset drink’s or just hiking to get the views. Recently, I love to escape in an Airbnb at Malibu, it’s surrounded by a garden with luxurious plants, there is an amazing 360° peaceful view on the hills and the ocean. It’s totally remote and I love to write there.

Joshua Tree is a perfect escape I always recommend.. Im a nature lover and always need to disconnect.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Free the work has been a great support to start my career as a Director in US, teaching be about how this industry works, introducing me to people and as well as supporting my new business! Especially, two incredibles women who shaped my journey, Pamala Buzick and Emma Reeves.
