We had the good fortune of connecting with Lexy McAvinchey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lexy, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I know for many of us, it’s been a really hard year. For some of us, it’s been a really hard few years before that. I’m 26 and sometimes it feels like my dreams are getting farther and farther away from me. I think humans are meant to expand or implode. Up until I was 22, I had been an expander. Then the great reckoning happened – I graduated college. How horrible, right? I no longer had teachers making the assignments, I stopped having due dates, and I got to choose where I went and what I did. The problem was, I no longer had teachers or due dates and I had to choose where I went and what I did. You hear people, especially women, say that no one had ever asked them that essential question, “What do you want?” I had never asked MYSELF that question. I’d been doing what other people wanted my entire life and finding enormous gratification from it. Needless to say, with no one to please but myself, I was stumbling. I tried to fix the issue by inserting boys into my life – maybe I could find gratification by making them happy? I did the same thing with friend groups held together by political beliefs. I tried making it work at different day jobs that had extremely low expectations of me. I have since left and been left by a lot of boys, run away from a lot of toxic friendships, but simultaneously gotten promoted at the aforementioned day jobs and now have much higher expectations on my shoulders – my saving grace. After all these years, my living circumstances have finally stabilized. What I’m learning now is how to ask for help. The film industry is just that, an industry, and I’m finished trying to solve it alone. I’m not going to let my dreams skip off and help themselves to someone else – I’ve got learning to do. I’ve got a good foundation on my career, now I’ve got to push it further. This time, the assignments handed in will be designed for my own eyes – Prof. Lexy. Regardless of what we do in our lives, it has to be in an attempt to keep expanding. It doesn’t have to be what we originally planned, but it’s got to feel good. Collapse is not an option, because life is just too delicious to miss; because the sun just isn’t in that phase yet.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an employee/professional and simultaneous artist/creative. I work an industry desk by day and build my own business by night – writing, acting, and directing for various mediums. I’m on the quirky end of things, and I love telling stories about complex women – whether that’s embodying them, imagining them, or helping another actor connect to them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Right now, I think the absolute coolest place to be is inside your own home, figuring out how fun and interesting your own brain is. In the before times – I’d take my bestie to Santa Monica Brew Works for a good flight of craft beer, and Good People Coffee for intellectual stimulation and the best cup of joe in town. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to shoutout Broken Slate Productions, The Geffen Playhouse, Mary Joan Negro, Audrey Moore, and my loved ones, all for helping me find where I’d put my bootstraps.
