We had the good fortune of connecting with Lilah VolpeEmerson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lilah, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My work life balance has changed tremendously in the last three years. Not only am I co founder of The Seeking Light Foundation, but I am also Co Owner of Card De A gift shop in the Riviera Village. I also make Soy Candles in my garage, aka my candle factory… and on top of all that I am a widow with 2 young daughters. So… yes I am busy. To say the least. But I enjoy it very much. I think it’s important to keep moving and and growing and living… especially through grief. I hope it is something my daughters will admire in me, later in life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well for this question I will talk about the non profit… The Seeking Light Foundation. Starting the foundation was not difficult for Shannon & I. Yes, lots of time and dedication, but the choice to do it , comes from passion and care and self experiences. Choosing to do something to help those and their loved ones struggling with mental illnesses is what matters to us. Do we get paid… no. Do we work continuously, yes. Right now, the most exciting part of our foundation is our Therapy Financial Assistance Program. This program allows us to pay for people’s therapy that cannot otherwise afford it. We have changed lives already and we are so proud of this program. Of course, we rely on donations to be able to get people in to therapy. It costs an average of 1500 per person for 4-6 months of therapy. So donations matter… and help more than we know how to explain. Having this non profit means everything to Shannon & I. We put our hearts and souls in to it and we will not stop. It took just the two of us to start it, but it will take a village to keep it going,

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well… I love my little town and The Riviera Village. It is truly my happy place. So of course, we would visit all the shops in the village especially Card De A… multiple times. (Since it’s mine. 😉) We would most definitely eat at Rockefeller in redondo… kind of my home away from home. But I would also venture out for a drive in my 56 tbird to Malibu and eat at Moonshadows… maybe do a little wine tasting at Malibu Wines. Maybe take a trip to Laguna Beach for a day , walk around, shop, eat and drink. These are the things I enjoy. Oh and… possibly a sunset cruise with Pacific Ocean Charters. 😊

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost , I could not do any of what I do without the support of my family and friends. I also could not run Card De A alone, and so I don’t! Kim Judy is my best friend and business partner at Card De A and I am so happy we have our little shop together. The Seeking Light Foundation would not be alive without my friend and co founder Shannon Hennessey-Lang. We work so hard together to bring awareness about mental illnesses and the importance of mental health. Together we help others… and that is why we created this foundation.
