We had the good fortune of connecting with Maranda Sanford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maranda, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Illuminary was born out of the idea that everyone has light inside of them, a spark that wants to be ignited, and if we are able to heal ourselves enough, that spark will be lit. That spark is a ripple effect that goes out and inspires others to light their own inner flame.

The pandemic and modern work challenges have professionals burned out, and their light has all but extinguished. Many desperately need stress relief but they do not have the energy to start a new habit nor do they feel therapy is the right fit. Alternative healing sounds promising but the industry is confusing and many don’t know where to start.

Illuminary provides accessible, joyful ways to reconnect with yourself through curated events, healers, and products that integrate all aspects of healing. We’re the middle ground between a meditation app and therapy. By meeting people at the very beginning of their healing journeys, we nurture that curiosity by giving them a joyful way to experience self-growth and personal development through curated workshops and programs in all aspects of healing.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Illuminary connects people to alternative aspects of healing through virtual workshops and programs. In covid, there are tons of different virtual events you can attend, and it can be overwhelming when we’re all just doing the best to take care of ourselves. At Illuminary, we’ve worked hard to create spaces that actually relieve stress and cultivate a deeper and richer inner life. Soon, we’ll also be offering ways to continue your healing journey, by working with our vetted and trusted practitioners.

We’re unique in that we serve mostly people who work in the corporate world, acting as the bridge between the professional and the spiritual worlds. But the good news is that you don’t have to be one type of person in Illuminary Collective. You can be into reiki and work on Wall Street. You can be a corporate attorney and be interested in manifestation. We welcome all the sides to our luminaries because there’s room for all of it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
-Venice Beach and boardwalk for casual lunch/drinks – The waterfront for epic sunset views -De buena planta for some vibey vegan
-House of intuition on Melrose for a crystal EXPERIENCE
-A hike in Malibu (Hidden Falls) always feels like an escape from the city hustle followed by a drive north on the PCH.
-Farmer’s Market at the Grove, love the flower mart
-Griffith Observatory and meditation at the top, put life in perspective
-A drive out to the desert – Joshua Tree of course. A religious experience.
-A night out in the Arts District – Guerilla Tacos. Everson Royce Bar is right across the street and can be a good time. Great outdoor area in the back so it’s covid approved.
-Erewhon Market naturally… it’ll cost you but it’s always good. The Pacific Palisades market, Santa Monica, and Venice spots get busy so the line can be long but it makes for great people-watching.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Libby Blasser, my cofounder and business school classmate, definitely deserves the shout out here! We first came up with the idea for Illuminary while we were working on a separate project together and during a break, we got to chatting about our shared love for all things astrology, tarot, and reiki. What started as a friendship became a strong business partnership. Over the past two years, she’s pushed me to grow personally in more ways than I can count. On top of that, she’s helped me better understand how to play to my strengths and be a better business partner and leader. I wouldn’t be running Illuminary without her.
