We had the good fortune of connecting with Marian Sarkisian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marian, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Growing up, I was always a part of an artistic family. My father played instruments, my mom was a fashion designer, my uncle painted the most beautiful paintings. My sisters and I grew up in a home that was focused on art. In my college years, I did not connect with any career paths that I was looking into because I always felt I belonged in the creative space. Once I realized that being creative was a big part of my identity, I dove in the the world of making cakes.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my artistic career by making birthday cakes and wedding cakes. When covid hit, I wanted to be able to expand my art even further. I saw a video of a realistic cake for the first time and wondered if I would be able to achieve it. I started making videos creating cakes that looked like other real life objects to see If I could fool the internet. The best part of this was being given the artistic freedom to design in my own way. Several videos began to go viral as I shared my art with the world. I began to get recognition and a large following for my work. Looking back at a lot of my cakes, there are so many things that I would change. It was definitely not perfect – but I truly was so proud of how they turned out at the time. I am happy that I kept going and that my skills improved immensely over time. I think the biggest take away from all of this is having patience and practicing over and over again to get to where you want to go. Today, I have a large following on a few different platforms and I still can’t believe that I was able to turn my passion and hobby into a career.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA has some of the best dining experiences! I would definitely have to start off by taking my BFF to In n out which is always the first stop any time I am back from a trip. Apart from beautiful places like the Hollywood sign and the Griffith Observatory, I would also like to show my best friend the hole in the wall spots that I grew up in. This includes my old high school (Glendale High), the Glendale galleria + Americana, and the Glendale public library. The most important of all, would be for my BFF to come over and have a huge family barbecue. My Armenian culture is big on having large parties and feeding guests the best Armenian cuisine.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to dedicate my success to my mother. I found my passion for baking at a young age when my mother would make our birthday cakes. I would find myself staring at her work for hours and wanting to join in and help with the decorating. This truly was the beginning of my career in baking as it was always in the back of my mind as I explored other options. Somehow, I always came back to baking. Those moments as a child stuck with me as I figured out my passion in my adult years.
