Meet Matthew Stein

We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Stein and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly, a lot of it came down to wanting to cut through the red tape. I felt like things could be done better, faster, and in a way that actually made life easier for clients instead of more complicated.
I also wanted the chance to build a team the right way, bringing in great people, teaching them, helping them grow, and watching them become really good at what they do. That part has been one of the most rewarding pieces.
And if I’m being candid, I just reached a point where I wanted to lead instead of always working within someone else’s system. Starting my own law firm meant taking responsibility for everything, the good and the bad, but it also meant having the freedom to build something the way I believed it should be done.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our firm is built around a few core values that guide everything we do: loyalty, professionalism, balance, and honesty. Those aren’t just words on a wall for us—they’re how we run the business and how we treat our clients and our team.
One thing that really sets us apart is how we develop our lawyers. We focus heavily on building people up. We want our attorneys to lead, to grow into their own voice, and to build careers they’re proud of. That means giving them the tools, mentorship, and space to learn at their own pace while still holding a very high professional standard.
I’m probably most proud of the team we’ve built. Watching people come in, develop confidence, take ownership of cases, and grow into leaders themselves is incredibly rewarding. That’s when you know you’re building something bigger than just a practice.
The road definitely wasn’t easy. Starting and growing a business never is. There are long days, tough decisions, and plenty of moments where you wonder if you’re doing it right. But those challenges force you to grow quickly. You learn to stay focused on your values, surround yourself with good people, and keep moving forward even when things feel uncertain.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that culture matters more than almost anything else. If you build a place where people feel respected, supported, and challenged in the right ways, the rest tends to follow.
At the end of the day, what I want people to know about our firm is pretty simple: we take our work seriously, we take care of our clients, and we take care of each other. If we do those things well, everything else tends to fall into place.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a good friend was visiting, we’d keep it pretty simple and spend most of the time near the water.
We’d probably start the morning with coffee at Moulin on PCH, great coffee, good pastries, and a perfect way to start the day.
From there we’d head down to Dana Point Harbor for a whale watching trip. Seeing whales or huge pods of dolphins out there never really gets old.
After being out on the water we’d definitely be hungry, so the next stop would be Truly Pizza for some pizza and a drink. It’s a great spot to hang out for a bit and relax.
Then later we’d head over to Salt Creek Grill to grab another drink and listen to some live music, and afterwards walk down to Salt Creek Beach for sunset. Hard to beat that view.
And if the visibility was good, we’d definitely rent some tanks and do a beach dive at Shaw’s Cove in Laguna Beach. I’m a licensed advanced scuba diver, and Shaw’s is one of the best local spots, you can see everything from garibaldi to sea lions if you’re lucky.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d definitely start with my father. He’s been my mentor for as long as I can remember and has had a huge influence on how I think about work, integrity, and responsibility. A lot of the way I approach business and leadership comes directly from watching him.
I’d also give a big shoutout to Strategic Coach. Being around other entrepreneurs and learning how they think about building companies has been incredibly valuable. It’s a great reminder that you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.
And of course, my wife deserves a lot of credit. She brings calm to the chaos and has always been incredibly supportive of the ups and downs that come with running a business.
Finally, my kids. They’re the daily reminder to do the right thing even when no one is watching. It’s funny how quickly your perspective changes when you realize little people are watching how you show up in the world.
