We had the good fortune of connecting with Maurice Manley II and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maurice, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
This question makes me think and rethink………I am challenged by the thought of this because all I know how to do is start businesses. It actually scares me to even consider getting a standard job. I guess I would say my mental process behind starting any business is a mix of, “This is all I know how to do” and “I am terrified of being someone else’s employee.” Here is my approach to creating businesses – 1) My knowledge/skill set in an industry, 2) My ability to produce the required results over and over again and lastly 3) Market conditions (what is the level of desire or need for my proposed offering). Let me not forget having fun! Any business I start, I must have fun while in the process of creating. What I despise the most is building something that feels like a chore, I won’t finish it nor will it be any good. I now look at starting businesses as things I use to make as a child. Let me explain. When I was growing up there were things that I wanted such as skateboards, bikes, toys, ramps etc. There were times when I didn’t want to wait to get the thing I wanted, so I would simply make it myself. I see business creation the exact same way, except at this stage of my life I’m looking to solve certain types of problems or I want to carry out various experiments and I am not going to wait for someone else to do it. For me, business ideation/business development is a playground full of activities, trinkets, and exploration.

What should our readers know about your business?
Almost 2 years ago I created “UNITED TRUST CREDIT” aka “UTC”. We are a business and finance solutions firm that not only offers strategies for tax mitigation (reduction of tax liabilities), business structuring , credit restoration and asset protection, we have also branched out into doing business valuations, mergers & acquisitions and business consulting. Currently, we are in the process of transitioning into a full service business development agency called “THE WESTHAVEN AGENCY” aka “TWA”. This is a one stop shop that can handle all of your strategic business needs, sans accounting and bookkeeping. What makes us unique is our ability to deliver a wide array of services under one roof. We do everything from drafting trust instruments, to assisting the growth and development of startups. Additionally, we aid in pre underwriting, which ensures a business is in the perfect position to be fundable, whether it is bank funding or private investors. I am thoroughly excited about our next phase of infusing tech into our service models through a partnership with “PHAZUR LABS”, which is an AI solutions firm. UTC has been able to expand to its current level because I am constantly researching and increasing my knowledge base. I have been able to grow in business primarily due to my level of curiosity and my rebellious tendencies. Since I do not like going along with the status quo, I’m often searching for different and unique ways to accomplish things. This way of being is very natural and easy for me because I really enjoy following the beat of my own drum, if you know what I mean. What’s great about my approach to business is, I look at it through a lense of psychology which is way more fun and exciting to me than anything else. I not only get to learn about other people’s mindsets, but more importantly I’m given the greatest opportunity, to learn and explore myself through various interactions and challenges. All businesses are based on psychology, there is nothing else going on! With this overstanding my team and I know that we (human beings) all want the same things in life and we are all looking to arrive at the same destinations. The sole difference between us all is the expression of our journeys, therefore we curate solutions base on each individuals way of being.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Assuming I had a friend visiting, our food experiences would be interesting because I eat plant based. The spots that I frequent are Real Food Daily, Cafe Gratitude, Butchers daughter, and True Food Kitchen. In terms of events and or activities, we would probably go roller skating at mountain valley or chino hills skate express. Next we would probably head to Torrance to K-1 Speed. Being that I enjoy physical we would also go to Sender One and do some mountain climbing and then go play a round of golf at Cheviot Hills. That would conclude the vacation extravaganza!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout out all the people who supported and believed in me through my journey, my family first of all Mom and Dad, my sister (Felicia Leatherwood), Ron Scott, Damon Dozier, Nick McGinnis, Eddie Addison, Kaili Kimura, Kacey Wilson, Jasmine Gray, Tatianna Cura, Austin Dove and so many more. Whoever I left out charge it to my mind and not my heart. I thank and love you all for your trust and consideration of me. I would also like to shoutout myself for not giving up and my continuous believe in myself. There have been many times when I heard the voices of doubt and judgment. I am extremely grateful that I did not give in, give out or give up! As far as books go there are several that have had a huge impact on me, I’ll try to keep the list brief……….. Conversations With God (Book 1), Power of Now, A New Earth, Outwitting the Devil, Laws of Success, E Myth, Think and Grow Rich, The 4 Agreements, The Alchemist, Psycho Cybernetics, The Courage to Be Disliked, The Wisdom of Mystic Masters and The Creative Act: A way of Being. There are so many more but I’ll spare you all the book report. I’m so grateful to and for all things!
