We had the good fortune of connecting with Max Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Max, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to be able to provide services to people in the community I lived in. A lot of skincare salons do not cater to us, and I was determined to change that. After spending years at a place I was unhappy, I decided to take a leap of faith and go for it.
What should our readers know about your business?
Uncovered LA is one of the first sugaring salons in the South Central / Inglewood area. I’m proud to be able to provide quality service to the people in this community, because we deserve nice things!
Getting to the point I’m at now was not easy at all. In 2018, left a job I was at for 5 years to be able to open my first studio in Inglewood. I ended up having to work 2 jobs on top of running my business just to keep it open. It wasn’t until the pandemic that I solely worked for myself. There were times that my personal life presented challenges; I was even homeless a couple times and resorted to sleeping in my salon for months at a time. But no matter how difficult things got, I held on. If you have a vision, do not give up. There will always be challenges, but as long as you continue to work on them, you will overcome.
I want to inspire people to go for it. If you have a dream, you can achieve it. Let my story be proof that if you believe in yourself, you can do whatever you set your mind to.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would have to do a coffee tour. My favorite coffee places are Coffee Del Mundo, Bohemian House of Espresso + Chai, Hilltop, Sip & Sonder, South LA Cafe (all black owned!) Court Cafe for breakfast, Earle’s for lunch, World Wide Tacos for tacos, Hungry Joe’s for Jamaican, Stevie’s Creole Cafe, drinks at Fiesta Martin – I can talk about food forever!
Definitely have to hit Leimert Park for some art. Maybe take my El Camino and cruise Crenshaw when everyone brings out their old school.
I also would have to take them to Malibu for a beach day. Might even do brunch at Nobu if ya fancy 😉
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is no one else that deserves recognition more than my clients. They are the best people I could’ve ever asked to work with, and I owe all of my success to their continued loyalty, compassion, and love. I could not have made it this far if it weren’t for them. So thanks y’all, I truly love every one of you.
