We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Angel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business, stemmed from an absolute need and mission to help others overcome chronic illnesses and metabolic disorders, the way that I had. I suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome aka Myalgic Enchephalomyelitis for 25 years and because doctors couldn’t heal me, I learned to heal myself through Ancestral Nutrition.
Thus, I knew that I must impart the knowledge I had gained to assist others in their personal fights to end disease and achieve optimum health. It just made sense to me to start my company Angel’s Nutrition and Wellness, and become Board Certified as a Holistic Health Practitioner. Starting my own business, gave me the freedom to coach and help others, so that they may too transform their lives.
What should our readers know about your business?
What sets Angel’s Nutrition and Wellness apart as a business and me as a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner and Nutritionist, is the type of nutrition education my clients receive and the specific foods recommended to overcome illness. I teach Ancestral Eating which includes: Ketogenic, Paleo, and even Carnivorous lifestyles. Many foods such as eggs, meat, and butter have been demonized in the mainstream media and even by several doctors. However, many of my clients are reversing an array of health and weight issues by utilizing those same foods as their staples, myself included.
As previously mentioned, I suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for 25 years, and it took years of trial and error and research to learn how to heal myself through Ancestral Eating. So, it was definitely not an easy journey. I went to over 50 doctors, but separate from surgeries they performed, they just couldn’t help me, I was forced to educate myself. Thus, my life’s trajectory naturally led me towards teaching others how to regain their vitality and reverse illness through nutrition.
My story, is now becoming many of my clients’ story. I am the most proud of helping clients overcome Diabetes, Thyroid Issues, High Blood Pressure, Digestive Disorders, Excess Weight, and a variety of other ailments which plague many Americans today.
Some of the lessons I have truly learned along the way, are: 1) We are all bio-individual and what’s best for one person in the area of nutrition, may differ for another, 2) Many of us don’t realize how even the smallest of allergies or illnesses can be related to food sensitivities and/or mineral deficiencies, 3) A variety of the foods that society associates with health problems actually have THE MOST bio-individually absorbable nutrients, which can potentially heal the body and fuel the mind, and 4) My business will only continue to grow if my audience and future clients see me as a relatable and trustworthy authority figure, who wants nothing more than to help them transform their lives.
What I want the world to know about my story is that, though so many of us worldwide, suffer from Chronic Illnesses, they are not normal. We must learn to be our own health advocates. We must do the research necessary and in a sense bio-hack our bodies, in order to learn what the perfect nutrition looks like for our individual selves.
Over the last 15 years, I have learned what an impact poor food choices can have on our bodies… Even to the point of stealing away our livelihoods. I was almost bed-ridden for the first two years of my illness and on top of the fatigue, I also suffered from: brain fog, short term memory loss, migraines, high blood pressure, essential tremors, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, fibroids, hypothyroidism, and more.
And now, I’m on a mission with Angel’s Nutrition and Wellness, and my Online Keto Nutrition Course entitled Halo’s for Health, to help others find their sweet nutrition spot. So that they may take preventative measures now, and/or regain any form of health and wellness that they have lost.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
1. If the movie theaters were open at full capacity, I would take a good friend to the newest Oscar worthy thriller and/or action-drama movie that was just released at the ArcLight in Pasadena.
2. We would hit the Hollywood Bowl for a concert to take in one of my favorite artists like Bruno Mars, H.E.R., Chris Stapleton, or a soulful legend like Gladys Knight.
3. I’d love also to take in a Dodger game with a good friend, as I use to be a hardcore athlete myself.
4. And for a good meal, we would hit up either a classic In-N-Out spot in LA, or the famous Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles for a delicious treat.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely! I first and foremost must shoutout my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, from whom all of my blessings have definitely been bestowed. I’d be lost without His guidance and His grace and mercy in my life!
Also… I have an incredible support system in my family. My father, Marvin Denton, taught me the value of hard work and what it means to be a business owner, while also being an incredibly kind human being with integrity. His love and support have given me the option and opportunity to continue building my business. During the years that I was sick, he spent 100s of 1000s of dollars in doctor bills on me, and even as recently as 3 years ago, he invested in my business by loaning me the finances to begin marketing my Online Keto Nutrition Course, Halo’s for Health.
Next, my brilliant and amazing mother, Cynthia Denton. My mom has always been the one person that I could lean on and go to for absolutely anything. Her unconditional love has given me the strength to get through life’s most difficult times, and because of her, I know what it means to be a good woman who would do anything for her family.
My next shoutout goes to my fantastic and creatively talented brother, Mayon Denton. I couldn’t have gotten through my years without him constantly having my back. Whether he was shuttling me back and forth to college, or shooting my music videos when I was singing professionally… He has always been a shining light who helped me with all of my goals. I learn so much from him till this day, and admire him so greatly for his inspiring work in the movie industry, for his respect and goodness to others, and for the phenomenal dad that he is to his two sons. He’s beyond remarkable!
And last but not least, I want to shoutout my biggest fan. My utterly fabulous boyfriend, Steven Estrada. As a 42 year old woman, I finally know what it means to be valued and thoroughly supported in a romantic relationship. I am grateful for each day that I spend with him, and although I started my business before we reunited in our lives, he motivates me with his insight and care to be better and to continue to live out my dreams.
