We had the good fortune of connecting with Maybed Romero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maybed, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I never intended to have my own cake business – I always cared about specialty & clean ingredients. I taught a classes in ancient grains where i learned about all types of flours and the role they play in baking. As a chef i already admired fresh and clean eating but something was missing. Ive always known my secret love was dough and batter. I wanted to become a pastry chef, so with the knowledge I had about working with fresh produce I began to teach myself to bake and laminate, you know all the good stuff. I was still missing “me”, because even with the knowledge I earned, I wanted to incorporate my creative taste and style. I kept exploring until i found everything that made me happy. Ive always been a tea lover, I love the light taste of herbs and flowers. They make me feel divine, so i wanted to re-create that in desert/pastry to invite other people with colorful tastebuds to my world. I just wanted to create something meaningful, beautiful, clean, tasty and bold.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to call myself, a cake artist, because the style of cakes that I create make flowers, plants & herbs the stars. I believe that herbs and flowers can be delicious in everything, if you disagree, let me change your mine. lol
Ive been a part of a few opening kitchens in LA, where I helped develop recipes and form teams for someone else. When I had the idea of sharing my product with others I didnt realize how hard it is to do it for yourself and how much more I had to research and learn about the industry. Creating recipes using minimal, soy-free, wholesome and fresh ingredients is not easy but its a fun challenge. Staying focus and honest to my vision and drive has always been my reminder to keep pushing forward.
With Mar y Luna, I specialize in herbal/floral tea infused cakes and pastries with floral decor styled to an individuals personality. We allow our beautiful product to shine by using minimal, clean, tasty, fresh and bold ingredients. Mar y Luna is a form of expression that represents everything that I care about and believe in. To be a part of many celebrations and making alot of women feel empowered on there birthdays, couples celebrating love, the expecting of a child, or an achievement – makes all challenges worth it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ive lived in Los Angeles all my life, so while exploring California I came across “Boulder City” what we call Joshua Tree and fell in love. I dont know what it is, possibily the life that inhabits the desert, the fact that 2 desserts meet, the hot desert sun. the coolness of being inside the boulders or the amazing scultures the Earth creates. I love it all. In Spring we camp or Autumn we rent a cabin, we will always bring own food, We will mostlikely, eat light and stay hydrated because we will do some exploring.
When I need solitute and or some fresh thinking Im drawn to the beach. The clashing waves show me streghth and to be gentle with myself.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To the person that sparked the fire within, supports all my crazy ideas and grows most of my flowers and herbs, Lu. For my grandparents who grow herbs, roses for me and taught me to never give up.
My mami for believing in me.
