We had the good fortune of connecting with Meme Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meme, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is the fact that I am providing a solution to a need. I am a licensed cosmetologist that specialize in kids hair. I have totally niched down to cater to a section in the beauty industry that is overlooked. How to deal with kids hair and finding the right products for them, was a mission. With my branding and marketing, I point out the problems that parents are having involving their kids hair, and provide a solution that my business have created. The brand provides educational material, along with tutorials, and product knowledge information to keep parents on top of things.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and what sets me apart from the average stylist is my niche with doing kids hair. Not many stylists have the patience or the drive to deal with kids. TRUST ME, this journey is a different type of beast lol
I am most proud of being able to create something for kids to be kids and have their own level of pampering. I opened a kids salon in 2017. We provide kids hair services, host events, and sell kids hair care products. In the salon, we captivate the kids, as well as the parents, with amazing décor monthly to keep them engaged and entertained.
My road to this point of my career has been amazing. When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work. The beginning of my journey started with enrolling and graduating from cosmetology school in 2013. From there, I worked in several shops to build clientele and find my place in the industry. Within 2 years, I grew my income and was able to quit my regular job. Now I must say, social media was not really a thing at that time, so it took a lot of leg work to get myself out there. I attended many social events, pop up shops, networking events, and more. I hit the pavement passing out flyers and cards all over my city. It wasn’t that the road wasn’t easy, it just took self will, determination, and consistency to “get to the bag”.
Fast forward until now, I have grown an established brand, have my products in stores, and have an amazing online presence. We have had many blog features and have so much more to come.
A few lessons I learned along the way were 1.) be consistent 2.) Sometimes you have to ignore the messenger and listen to the message, and 3.)always remain a student
I want the world to know that SILK ME KIDS is an amazing brand. We have great products for kids hair to be more moisturized, soft, and manageable. Our kids salon is here to service kids ages 2-17. Also, watch out for us because SILK ME KIDS will be the next household name for kids hair.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When coming to NEW ORLEANS, there is always so much to do. Now because I’m a local, I don’t do the average tourist stuff.
For things to do and places to visit, you could ride the street car, go on a swamp tour, do an escape room, do a bike ride, or walk on Decatur to the French Market. There is a really dope paint and sip called Paint Sip Eat Repeat (ig mr_paint.n.sip). If you want a relaxing spa day, I highly recommend Queendom Aesthetics (ig queendom_aesthetics) and for the guys Beyond Hair For Men (ig BeyondHairForMen).
