We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael and Josie Herman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael and Josie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Collaboration is the most important factor to our success. We constantly listen to each other and trust each other throughout the creative process. We believe compromise is the death of art. In compromise, both parties walk away a little disappointed, but with collaboration, the whole team feels like they have built something together. This means working with our fellow artists and not against them. We cast people that we trust and then respect what they bring to the table. The result of this collaboration has been over 100,000 downloads across over 80 different countries.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are a fully immersive audio drama. Basically television for your ears. We are committed to giving people a cinematic experience, but in the world of audio fiction. This means every scene, every moment, every sound effect is specifically crafted to move the plot forward or to provide character development (sometimes both). We spend months writing scripts and months editing each episode to maximize our storytelling and polish our narrative. Our show is a Lovecraftian science-fiction mystery that spirals through the swamps of modern-day New Orleans as two unlikely friends work together against a creature that longs to bring the world into perfect stillness. From the floor up, our show is designed for the audio medium and we are constantly looking for ways to push this medium further into unheard territory.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Great question! Josie and I love places all over the city. Pan Pacific Park is a lovely spot, as is the Huntington Gardens. We like places that remind us of home back in Michigan where there is nature and natural beauty. Fresh air is one of the best ways to keep our minds spinning for new projects.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people to thank! First and foremost, we want to thank our cast. They are all Michigan talent and so lovely to work with. Time and time again, people mention how good the acting is in our show and we owe that to them. We also want to thank our families for their constant support and help as we’ve transitioned into full-time artist lifestyles. We are both completely freelance and couldn’t have done that without them. And we also want to thank the great podcast shows that have come before us. Shows like the White Vault, We’re Alive, and Rabbits. These are giants in the world of podcasting and they helped pave the way for indie creators to make meaningful stories on this platform. They taught us how to work in this industry and helped illuminate where our story could fit in this tapestry of beautiful storytelling.
