We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Betzner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote is “when you’re uncomfortable you’re growing.” To me it signifies that uncomfortable feeling we get when we push ourselves. That moment when you’re about to do something you are afraid of.. you think”oh no, I might fail. I don’t know what I’m doing, this doesn’t feel familiar” but pushing through that feeling is how we grow. And when we grow we get better. Wether that be through failure or success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a conceptual portrait photographer. I like to think of myself less as a photographer and more as an artist since most of my work is based out of emotions or feelings. The main reason I create these images is so I can process or let go of an emotion that no longer serves me. I also strive to promote healing within myself and my clients through the images I create. Sure, sometimes I just want to take some pretty pictures but most of the time I find healing, or my clients find healing. And that’s what’s important to me. I have to give a lot of credit to social media, without tiktok and Instagram I would not be as successful as I am today. The tools I’ve been given as a creative in this day and age have moved me forward way faster than I could have done it on my own without social media.
What I want the world to take away from my work is that no matter your size, shape, color, or weight you are worthy to take up space. Nothing about the way you look can disqualify you from taking up space in our media. And when you push yourself to grow and share images of the insecure parts of you, not only will you grow, others will too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Raleigh and I’ve been here for about 4 years. The things I have found most interesting and enjoyable are the city nightlife.. Whiskey Kitchen is a go-to spot for my husband and me, we also love Watts n’ Ward.. both have amazing drinks and Whiskey’s food is amazing. I also love the art museum. The walking trails and sculptures are super fun to experience.. I also would recommend Falls Lake and William B. Umstead state park for hiking and biking trails! I’m a big hiker and the first two years I lived in Raleigh I basically stayed in Umstead just hiking for hours. Beautiful scenery and super secluded.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The person I’d like to dedicate this too is my husband. He is my biggest supporter and number one fan. He always pushes me to grow and doesn’t let me stay too comfortable.. I am so grateful for him.
