We had the good fortune of connecting with Mickael Gold and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mickael, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Persistence and continuous learning have been crucial. I always seek to improve my craft and adapt to new technologies and storytelling methods, which keeps my work relevant and engaging.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art, fundamentally, is about storytelling—delving deep into narratives that explore themes of redemption and second chances. What sets me apart is my dedication to authenticity and my hands-on approach in every project I undertake. From the intricate set designs inspired by my early days in architecture to the nuanced character development drawn from real-life experiences, each element is crafted to resonate deeply with audiences.

I am most proud of my ability to maintain creative control and integrity in an industry that often demands compromise. My films, like “California Dream,” “Mortal Poker,” and “36 Hours,” reflect my commitment to telling stories that are not just entertaining but also evocative and thought-provoking.

Getting to where I am today was not easy. The path from a set builder to an independent film director and producer involved countless challenges. Funding was an initial hurdle, learning to create art within the confines of limited budgets, much like my inspirations Roger Corman and Robert Rodriguez. This necessity taught me innovation—a skill that has become a signature of my work.

One significant challenge was the transition from production roles to the director’s chair. This move required not just a shift in skills but also in mindset. Overcoming doubts—both internal and external—about my lack of formal film education was tough. Yet, it was through persistence and a commitment to learning from every project that I gradually built confidence and respect in the industry.

The lessons I’ve learned are numerous, but one stands out: resilience is key. In filmmaking, rejection is frequent, and setbacks are commonplace. Embracing each ‘no’ as a step closer to ‘yes’ has been crucial, a sentiment echoed by my father’s advice which has guided me throughout my career.

What I want the world to know about my brand and story is that it is possible to create impactful, high-quality cinema without sacrificing one’s artistic vision. My journey underscores that with passion, resilience, and a bit of creativity, barriers can be transformed into gateways for innovation.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Los Angeles for a week, I’d make sure to mix iconic experiences with some local flavor. We’d start with brunch at the historic Formosa Cafe, known for its classic Hollywood vibes. A drive through the scenic Mulholland Highway would be a must, perhaps on a motorcycle or in a sports car to really soak in those stunning city and valley views. We’d spend a day exploring the natural beauty and community vibe of Pacific Palisades, perhaps hiking in the nearby trails or just enjoying the beach. Evenings would be spent discovering some of LA’s vibrant food scenes, from street food in Downtown LA to upscale dining experiences in Santa Monica. Throughout the week, we’d check out local music venues or catch a live show, ensuring a taste of LA’s dynamic cultural offerings.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely, I’m thrilled to share this. Success truly is a collaborative endeavor, and I’ve been fortunate to draw inspiration from a host of incredible talents across the industry.

Firstly, Roger Corman and Robert Rodriguez have been monumental in shaping my approach to indie filmmaking. Their ability to create impactful cinema on tight budgets taught me the importance of resourcefulness and creativity without extensive financial backing.

Christopher Nolan has been another significant influence, especially for his mastery in using practical effects to create breathtaking cinematic experiences. His work inspires me to think on a grander scale within my projects.

In terms of literature, ‘The Last Tycoon’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald has been pivotal. It’s not just a book for me but a manual on the mindset of overcoming obstacles and steering through the complex waters of film production like a true tycoon.

Tom Cruise stands out for his incredible persistence and dedication. His commitment to his roles and his craft, doing what it takes to achieve perfection, encourages me to push my limits.

Lastly, James Cameron is the epitome of ambition in filmmaking, showing what’s possible when you dare to dream big. His films are a testament to pushing technological and narrative boundaries.

Each of these figures has contributed to my development as a filmmaker, teaching me lessons in persistence, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. I am deeply grateful for their influence and hope to reflect even a fraction of their impact in my work.
