We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikey Candela and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mikey, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue an artistic career because I’ve expressed interest in music at an early age. From what my family tells me; I used to dress up as different artists that were popular at the time and perform their music around the house for all to see. Once I became an adult, I realized that making music not only makes me happy but others as well. Receiving feedback from friends and family has had a positive impact on me and my decision on making music my career. Fast forward to present day, I still enjoy receiving feedback, but now it’s from people from all over the world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Along my 12-year career as a recording artist, I have learned a lot about music and myself. One thing I love is to push myself to try new things and new genres all while keeping the vibes positive. I decided early in my career that I want to make people happy and spread joy through my music. One of my greatest accomplishments so far is I was able to perform on the biggest stage in my city “El Choli” in Puerto Rico. I was able to open up for a band that was playing in the arena, and they needed an opener. I performed “in costume” from one of my music videos which was a superhero. As I was performing, I can clearly hear the audience gasp, laugh and sing along towards the end of my show. It was an incredible experience which boosted my confidence in what I’m doing. Since then, I have been performing on big stages in different parts of the island taking my music to new people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The wonderful thing about Puerto Rico is that there are so many things to do in such a small area. I would start by taking a friend to “El Yunque” which is the only rainforest in the Caribbean. We would hike to the top and cool off in one the waterfalls on the way down. Later, lunch in Luquillo along the beach which has wonderful seafood. Next up would be a tour of our mountains, west coast beaches and the roaring nightlife in San Juan. Puerto Rico has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world along Vieques, Culebra, Veba Baja and the West Coast. To finish the week, I would top it off with a visit to one of my favorite restaurants, “La Garita” in La Perla community in Old San Juan. Along with the great local food, it has one of the greatest views one can have while eating.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to send a special thank you to the producers who believed in my work even before I recorded my first song. Producers like Carlos Velazquez, Viarucci, DJ DJ Joe and Vangs Daire have helped me in various ways which helped strengthen my career in more ways than one. From vocal coaching, samples, original beats and great ideas; these guys have proven their unconditional support. Thanks to them, my music has gotten a lot better and reached people all over the world.
