Meet Mikey Montemayor | Comedian & Screenwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikey Montemayor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikey, what do you attribute your success to?
I think what’s helped me the most in all of my creative endeavors, both as a screenwriter and a stand up comedian is consistency. There is no waiting for a muse or inspiration to hit you. There’s no such thing as writer’s block. You just have to sit down and do it everyday. On days you don’t feel like it, on days where it doesn’t seem fun or inspiring, those are the days that will make you. All of the work I’ve done in the dark, on my own, is what leads to the stuff that people see and applaud for. And learning how to consistently show up for yourself like it’s a full time job, is the most important thing that has helped me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I began as a writer in college, working alone on movies in my dorm, making myself laugh. And as I developed my voice more, I began to do standup and work on stages, facing my fears and making other people laugh. And it’s really been paying off in the last couple years, I’m now headlining some cruise ships as a comedian. And I’m so grateful for the gay audiences who have supported me. Coming out and being vocal about my struggles has been inherent to my comedy, and through the hate on the internet, I’ve found an audience of people who actually resonate with my standup. So they really help me to keep going. And along the way I really learned that authenticity is the key to success. The more truthful and honest I am, the more relatable the material seems to be, and the more it resonates with an audience across gender lines or sexuality. I want to make all people laugh, and I’m slowly doing just that!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d definitely take a friend to some of the comedy clubs in the area. The trifecta being the Laugh Factory, Comedy Store, and Improv. I’m been on stage at all of them and always love the rush! And would hit up boystown on Santa Monica in weho. A nice dinner at Bottega Louie with some people watching at HiTops or the Abbey is always a fun night out.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my mentor Dana Fox. She taught me everything I know about comedy writing. I began working with her as her writer’s assistant on the live action Cruella for Disney, and continued on to see her do so many great movies, including the recent Wicked movie. She taught me as a screenwriter how to make it in this industry and I wouldn’t be anywhere if it weren’t for her.
