We had the good fortune of connecting with Miriam Beato and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miriam, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my business and career has taught me is to never take anything for granted and enjoy every single moment, minute, second you have when you’re doing what you love, with who you’re around, and what you’re learning. To never let the no’s stop, you from becoming who you’re destined to be and know that everything takes time, patience is key.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work at a daycare for about 6 years ages ranges from 3 months to 12 years old. Working with children from all different backgrounds and disabilities has definitely made a huge impact on my life. To being able to be a positive part of someone’s day, to seeing every milestone was a blessing that I never once took for granted. I believe the proudest moment that I am realizing is noticing what my calling is in life. For many years I struggled with self-image, body dysmorphia and eating disorder. I had to overcome many challenges from learning to love myself again, not listening to what other beauty standards are but rather listen to what my body needs when it comes to nourishment and love. It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today, it took a lot of strength, many years of crying myself to sleep, dissociation, but with the help of my family and friends I was able to overcome many obstacles that life through at me. While going through my own journey, I created MAB Models Management, which is my modeling agency. I wanted it to be cater to everyone, not just a specific size, height and look. MAB stands for marketing all beauty, and it was something that I was very adamant about when I was designing and working on my brand. To bring everyone together, to show that there is a spot for everyone in this industry was important to me. Alongside from my modeling agency, I also created my handmade crochet clothing and accessories brand, at the time it was called crochetbymab, but as I grew older and more in-tune with myself, I found myself wanted to showcase what my brand is about with meaning. I remember starting my body positivity shoot which included so many beautiful models shot by my friend Nostalgicimages aka James, and in that moment, I turned to Emily and stated I think I want to showcase this in a separate page. From there we were saying different names and what it would mean, where is how we came up with InSKYN. Meaning feeling beautiful in your own skin, no matter what. Til this very day, I still think about that moment with my angel and I’ll always be thankful to know she had a special part in creating something so meaningful to me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I would take them to community events like PVD Fest, awareness walks, etc. to showcase the heart of Rhode Island and the community we have. I would take them to different fashion shows, to showcase the talent we have here in Rhode Island, as well as musicals shows.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My story starts in 2013 with my first fashion show ever whom I had the pleasure of walking for Maria Del Carmen Mercado designs, if it wasn’t for my mother who gave me the push to be confidence enough, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I also owe a huge shoutout to my runway coach Orlando Genao, who taught me everything I know today from pivots to turns, to taking etiquette classes while being a part of Spring Colors owned by the very best Martha Villar. I feel as if there’s so many great people and teachers who have help me become who I am today, Annie my belly dance teacher, Francis Parra who gave me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone performing for Ecas Theater, my family and best friend, and my significant other. I would also like to shoutout the photographers with whom I worked with over the years who helped me step out of my comfort zones and those who took shots of me during fashion shows and events and in general, @nostalgicimages_, @mduranstudio, @josearieldiaz and @byrachellehman, @alexysbdesigns. I would also like to dedicate a shoutout to my two angels Yasmary Valdera and Emily Sierra, who was a huge part of the modeling community. Their excellence and memory will always be with me and everyone they loved.
