We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Salazar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was born into a entrepreneurial family. My mom started her own party supply business when I was 3 years old, and my older brothers also have their own small businesses. This is the type of environment I grew up in. To me starting your own business seemed almost normal. I remember helping my mom out at her store and just interacting with customers at a young age and I loved it! I was ALWAYS trying to think of my next project. What can I do as a child to make money? A cousin and I started baking cupcakes and called ourselves “Las Primas cupcakes.” We would set up a little booth in my moms store and sell cupcakes daily. When I got to middle school was when I first learned about makeup, and although I wasn’t allowed to put it on myself I loved doing my moms makeup. Come around to high school and this passion for makeup and expressing my creativity through it grew which was when I said “Beauty is my thing, this is where I want to start my business in.”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a freelance makeup artist and beautician. I like to think of my business as a one stop shop for all your beauty needs. I am the most proud of putting myself out there and show casing my work. Getting to where I am today was not easy but definitely worth it. It takes a lot of time and dedication to make a business bloom. I over came a lot of mental hindrances by just reminding myself there will always be someone else doing what you are doing, but that doesn’t mean you dont have to do it. It just means you have to work harder to set yourself aside and make yourself memorable. I want the world to know I put my heart into my work. I express my feelings through my art, and there’s nothing better then the satisfaction I get from seeing my clients glow in their own ways.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a foodie, and a sucker for aesthetics. I would definitely be looking up some aesthetically pleasing restaurants where we can get cute, have a mini photo shoot, and get some great food out of it. You can find many of those in LA like Pearls rooftop. We’d hit up some outdoor adventures after, like malibu beach or just cruising the coastline and see where we end up. I have two sides of myself I like to think of as well so we might even throw on some boots and head on over to a fun rodeo. I’m not the planner type I like to just go with the flow of what we are feeling. It can be as simple as a picnic in the backyard or park. One thing for sure though is wherever we have some fruity drinks, and good music. I’ll make sure we have a good time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am today without my mom and older brothers. Its thanks to them I have a risk taking mindset, and received all the love and support to pursue my passion in beauty.
