We had the good fortune of connecting with Nandy McClean and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nandy, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Sydney, Australia. I grew up in a 1 bedroom cabin in the forest with my mother and my twin sister. I would say that my mother was my biggest influence with who I am as a person, my authenticity, love and care for people. She encouraged me to follow my dreams with her unconditional love and support. No dream was too big. My father was my biggest influence genetically with my interest in music, dance and entertainment. He was a very talented guitar player and loved being on stage. The combination of the two made me who I am today.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am director and founder of Los Angeles based production company NM FILMS. We create, develop and produce music videos, promotional content, testimonial videos, and short films that awaken the human condition. What sets us apart is we focus on doing business with female business owners and minorities. We use visual story-telling, particularly focused on stories for minorities as a medium to create equality and impactful content.

Past clients include artists Prince, NPG, India Arie, BMG, TIDAL, Maya Jupiter, new artist Hope Waidley, and Michelle Kash and more.

My biggest achievement as a director and production company owner is music video Steady Love for 4 time Grammy Winner India Arie, which was nominated in 2019 for Outstanding Music Video/Visual Album at the 51st NAACP IMAGE AWARDS. The video was well-received and featured David Banner. It depicts a couple in everyday, domestic situations that resonated with viewers and was a refreshing depiction of black love, romance and vulnerability.

Having a business isn’t easy. My biggest struggle lately was during COVID when all productions shut down. That was hard, but we are up and running smoothly again. If you have I passion or a dream you just have to keep going. Consistency is the key. I struggle with that at times, but it’s all about growth and constantly evaluating how you can do better and improve your service for your clients.

I want the world to know that if you are a female business owner, minority business owner, or have a business that needs powerful and impactful visual video content, we’d would love to hear from you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m very much into nature, spirituality, and healthy living, so I would take her to Lake Shrine, it’s a beautiful meditative lake connected to the self realization center in Malibu. Then I’d take her hiking in the Pacific Palisades at Will Rogers National Park at sunset. Then I’d take her to my favorite restaurant for atmosphere in Topanga Canyon called Inn of the Seventh Rey. It’s nestled in the canyon by a river bed surrounded with fairy lights and has a spiritual gift shop attached. It’s magical. For a more bohemian experience id take her to Abbot Kinney Blvd in Venice for cool shopping and then hit Venice beach to show her all the different characters. I’d also take her to Paradise Cove in Malibu and enjoy the beach and Paradise Cove Beach Cafe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would say Prince. I was a back up singer and dancer for him for 10 years. He was also my first client as a director. I want to say thank you for your inspiration, life lessons, and love. Your blessings are endless, and continue to this day.
