We had the good fortune of connecting with Natou Fall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natou, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking is where growth is. In my own practice, I would not be where I am now if I didn’t take on projects that were way out of my comfort zone. I wouldn’t even be an artist today if it wasn’t for making risky decisions like changing my major halfway through school, or moving across the country. Ultimately it’s about being bold and giving yourself grace, every risk comes with the possibility of failure, and a failure is just a lesson that needs to be learned.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a visual and makeup artist, designer, model, and educator. What sets me apart is my genuine impact and involvement in every aspect of the creative process in a single project, regardless of the scale. I love working behind the scenes just as much as I love being in front of the camera. I am most excited about some sculptural pieces I’ve been working on for an exhibition coming up in July.

Professionally I still have a ways to go, but that evolves with time and experience. I’m two years out of school and in many ways I’m still figuring it all out. It definitely wasn’t easy getting to where I am right now, its been a lot of no’s, ignored emails, and projects that have fallen through. But my journey up until this point has taught me that patience and perseverance are key, as long as you love the work, you have to keep trying.

I want the world to know that if you’re ready to put in the work, there’s room for anyone to succeed as a creative.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Favorite places for views are the beaches, specifically Dockweiler Beach, there’s something about watching planes fly over head that I love.

Downtown in the arts district Hauser and Wirth, and MOCA are great spaces to see art, the Underground Museum in Arlington Heights too.

To eat, the list could go on. I love any and all kinds of food, but if I had to pick, my top places to are Marugame Monzo, Pho 2000, Ramen Hood, BCD Tofu House, Guisados, and the ultimate place for breakfast burritos Wake&Late.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout production designer Jhana Parits for giving me my first gig on a set ever, my closest friend and biggest support Tife Adetunji, an event planner and coordinator, and my colleague another artist/educator Leah Wulfman. There are so many more people to shoutout, I feel really lucky to be surrounded by people who are encouraging and supportive.
