We had the good fortune of connecting with Neha Shaida and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Neha, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is the leading character in my career. In the industry I work in you will always have people that give you no’s, reject you, don’t believe in you, or don’t think you’re good enough, you truly have to bet on yourself, and that’s what I did time and time again. It would have been easy to give up after every no and take my two degrees and get a very high paying job but I always chose to take the risk, bet on myself and double down. The truth is if you don’t believe in yourself you can’t expect other people to, specially in an industry where it takes a lot of convincing to get anywhere.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I don’t think anyone necessarily has an easy career in the industry I work in, if you do, you’re lucky. It takes a lot of hard work and betting on yourself time and time again to see success. The beautiful thing about this industry is everyones path is so different and there’s no one right way. I was a journalism major in college who always loved talking to people and finding their story. I landed an internship at Power 106 where my love for journalism got combined with my deep love for music and I knew it was a path I wanted to risk taking. I ended up staying two years, then moving on to BET, TuneIn, and freelancing until I landed my own show in Vegas, where I stayed for two years. That’s my path in short, leaving out all the messy, hard, tears, sweat, and blood. In between I started a podcast, got another degree & learned a million lessons about myself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The beautiful thing about LA is there’s something for everyone. I would definitely cater my itinerary to the person, but in general, I’d probably start out with a hike at Elysian where you get that beautiful secret spot view at the top. Other things on my LA list: brunch at the Rose Cafe Venice, bike riding in Venice, beach day in Malibu, dinner at Ysabel, drinks at the Bungalow, the room, Good Times at davey waynes, no vacancy, and blind barber for some interesting bars, and a rooftop view at EP & LP. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s hard to pinpoint one specific person, organization, book, or mentor that helped me on my journey because so many things & people helped me. I don’t know where I would be without the people in my life who gave me the words of encouragement I needed to hear in those moments I couldn’t give them to myself, the moments I cried in my car thinking wow this is hard & someone told me exactly what I needed to hear. My circle of friends are as solid as they come for giving me that.
