We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick, how do you think about risk?
I think about risk a lot – if there’s no risk, and you knew exactly what was going to happen, wouldn’t life be boring?
Risk doesn’t mean flying blindly into the wind and hoping everything is going to be okay. I’m a bigger fan of the calculated risk; you still don’t know what will happen, but at least you’ve played it out a bit in your head.
The biggest risk was moving out here for college with no connections and no friends – yet it was the best decision I’ve made. The next biggest risk I took was a job out of college where I could barely afford rent. I loved the business and figured I could get by for a year on very little money while learning a ton. That experience has been such an asset as I’ve evolved in my career.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Matador Solutions is a digital marketing Co-Op that is focused on helping attorneys grow their practices. It’s a bit like an agency meets a thinktank . . . our roots go back to when I was 12 years old and first learning to SEO, and starting to help out with my parents’ Washington D.C. law firm.
I’m most proud of how much our small team has accomplished – we’re about 13 full-timers who do a great job working with our firms. That said, we’re growing a ton, and I’m excited to see how the next few years play out as we work with more and more firms as their go-to marketing resource.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m coming up on 10 years in the city – I first moved here for undergrad in August 2014, and haven’t left! Even now I feel like I’m learning new parts about the city every day.
I live in Venice, and if someone was visiting me for the weekend, a Saturday might look something like this: waking up early and going to Malibu for a surf, then going to Howdy’s for a breakfast burrito and coffee. Head back to the westside around noon and spend some time on Abbot Kinney and walking the canals before getting ready for dinner. I always love to take people to Dudley Market when they visit.
Sunday morning I’d go for a hike on Los Liones before coming back to the Westside, then go to Barney’s Beanery in West Hollywood to watch football and shoot some pool!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely my parents and siblings.
