We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Herrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, how do you think about risk?
When starting a business, it’s all about the risks you take daily to get yourself and your business further. It’s difficult at times because you’re not sure if you’ll succeed or if you’ll fail, but what is business with out the risk? There are times when I feel so inspired, but unsure that if I put the work and effort in certain aspects of my business, that it will succeed. You never know how far you’ll go with something until you’ve tried it and that is the point of it all. My whole life I have been very open minded and down to earth. I was never afraid of failing, rather I was afraid of never trying something. When I first started Nude Cosmetics, I didn’t know that I’d be in the position I am in today. And that is the beauty of it. What if I never had the courage to take the leap of faith and start my business? I wouldn’t have had the opportunities I have had if I didn’t. I wouldn’t have a list of products with my brand name in several peoples homes. I would have never had the opportunity to have my products on the face of celebrities or have met other strong entrepreneurs. I wouldn’t have built the relationships with my customers that I have now. Risk taking is a gamble, but as long as you believe in yourself and what you have to offer, your business will succeed.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a Latina from East Los Angeles, it was very rare at the time to see a women venture off on her own to start a business. To risk everything she had to make her dream a reality. nude Cosmetics was created in hopes to make both women and men of all colors feel beautiful. I started off with lashes and later expanded with more products because I loved the way my customers looked and felt when wearing my products. I established very strong relationships with my customers as well and listened to what they wanted me to bring in. Nude Cosmetic wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the support my loyal customers gave me. It’s been a difficult journey. Nude Cosmetics turns 3 in May, and I feel like I am nowhere near where I want to be, but have seen the most growth when I don’t doubt myself and stay consistent. I try not to compare myself to other small businesses because I have to remember we are all on a different path. I out in hours of hard work daily to make sure that my business is set up for success. I have always been so passionate about beauty and making others feel beautiful. I remember as a little girl, I’d do my grandmas makeup before bed, practiced putting on eyelashes on my mom, offer to do makeup on my fiends for their quinceneras and winter formals. I loved seeing their reactions when I held up the mirror so they can see the outcome and their faces always made me feel so special. I always imaged myself owning a business and venturing off into beauty products just felt right. I want my people to know that I am not in this industry for a quick buck, rather I plan to do this long term and bring in products that fit everyones needs.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend were to visit, I would rent us a hotel in Palm Springs as that is my favorite close to home vacation spot. You can never go wrong with being in the desert! I’d book us a massage at the Sands Hotel and Spa and have a good brunch there as well. Wed then buy some wine and snacks and head back to our Air Bnb to enjoy the pool for the rest of the day. On our way back home from our trip, we’d stop at the camarillo Outlets and sludge a bit since we deserve a little shopping spree! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without the help and support of my parents, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I would have never gathered up the courage to start a business from scratch. They supported me in every way possible to make sure I succeed. I can’t say there is a person that I went for business advice, or a book I read. I was self taught in almost everything I know right now, but that’s not to say that others shouldn’t ask for help along the way.
