We had the good fortune of connecting with Ocelotlcuauhtli Tellez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ocelotlcuauhtli, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your band?
I started my guitar journey a couple months after graduating high school and continued practicing throughout college. During the pandemic I put quarantine time to use and spent lots of time practicing and listening to music daily. I dove into the work of Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, Santana, and Miles Davis, just to name a few. Each played in groups of their own, where each player contributes something special to the music. There is a certain energy that is present when playing with other people that allows for a spontaneous freedom of expression. I wanted to create a group where each person can play freely through their own voice and contribute to the music as a whole.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your music, what can you share with our community?
I am not exactly sure how I would describe my music. It’s a combination of my experiences in this world. I like to musically challenge not only myself but the band as well whenever I can.

Forming the band was easier than I initially thought. The band is currently composed entirely of current UC Riverside students and alumni. It was a matter of getting likeminded folk together at least twice a month while each juggling personal responsibilities. For that I appreciate them immensely.

I’ve learned that persistence, passion, and practice are key.

My music is for anyone who wants to listen. We express a universal sound that every human being can enjoy.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Realistically the list is way too long, however ill try to summarize it. Firstly, I would like to give credit to family, especially my mom and dad, who both not only introduced me to my first musical inspirations, but who also support me every step of the way.

My band members current and past, without you guys this project wouldn’t exist. I truly appreciate your dedication to your music and the group.

To Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, Albert King, Jimi Hendrix, and countless more who have provided wisdom and inspiration through their music and lives.
