We had the good fortune of connecting with Opal Unicorn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Opal Unicorn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
it was a natural thing, honestly. I think that being part of corporate america designing toys for so long had something to do with it. I think it make my mind capitalistic, and i reflect on that, and think why do i wasnt to make products now? I love manufacturing , its second nature to me, i have been in in this business for o long, that i guess why not make your own small business , using sustainable materials , with better messages than what we see in big business . ..

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
since i was a little girl I had a stuffed unicorn named Daisy. I loved that unicorn like it was real. I loved it so much that i wished one day she would be real, (like the velveteen rabbit) and i would finally not be alone anymore and have the best friend i always wanted. Nothing in the world would be better than having a real unicorn as a best friend, and i knew that if that happened i would cure that pain i always felt, that alone feeling that never could go away. I always attributed myself with the unicorn. When i was little my aunt gave me an opal for my first communion . It was the most incredible thing /gift i had ever gotten. It changed my life. I would dream that i lived in a house made of opals, and that instead of gold coins like scrooge mcduck, i would be swimming in opals. THis is still my business plan and my art inspiration , it is the wonder of elevating the. mind to rainbow world that i seek to find in the iridescent rainbows of the heavens in the sky.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
since i am born and raised in los angeles, i would give them a tour that i love. i would take them to the liquor bar at the top of the bonaventure hotel,in down town la, it spins slowly and has the best liquor menu. I would take them to santi street to shop, in down town la, I would take them to the dorothy chandler theater to watch an opera, and now, witht he corona virus, i would take them on a hike in griffith park.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would give a shout out to all the big eye artists who have inspired a whole genre of modern low brow art that is in the minds and hearts of so many online.
