We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrina Dixon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patrina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The motivation behind starting my business was to play a role in helping people take control of their finances and shift how they think about money.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Founder & CEO Patrina Dixon is reshaping the financial landscape with her company, It’$ My Money, a black woman-owned business committed to empowering high school students and adults. Through in-person and online sessions, It’$ My Money makes financial education practical and accessible by incorporating hands-on activities, relatable strategies, and lessons rooted in real-life experiences.

It’$ My Money engages audiences through social media, a dedicated blog, and a popular podcast, while also extending its reach with several best-selling books. Our mission is to empower individuals to take control of their financial future and confidently say, ‘It’s My Money,’ equipped with the knowledge and tools to take the next step forward!

One of Patrina’s proudest accomplishments was her relentless advocacy, in partnership with a local Connecticut senator, to make financial literacy a mandatory requirement for high school graduation. After years of dedication, 2023 marked a significant milestone: the Connecticut governor signed into law a mandate requiring all high school students to complete a full-semester, half-credit course in financial literacy before graduating. This legislation ensures that every student in Connecticut has access to essential financial education. The key lesson she learned throughout this journey is that one person can make a difference—with perseverance.

Patrina is proud to be a graduate of the Goldman Sachs One Million Black Women in Business Program. The program provided me with invaluable tools and resources to grow and scale my business, and I had the opportunity to connect with inspiring Black women entrepreneurs from around the world.
Patrina and the It’$ My Money team are committed to transforming how people view and manage their finances.

Patrina also founded Grants for Small Business Owners, a platform designed to help small businesses discover new grant opportunities to fund their ventures. Grants provide a debt-free way for entrepreneurs to access capital. The platform also offers live monthly business coaching and training for those who join as elite subscribers. The mission of It’$ My Money and Grants for Small Business Owners is to empower individuals by offering financial literacy tools through practical exercises, expert advice, and strategies aimed at building generational wealth.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’re exploring a new area and discovering it as we go. On the first day, we’ll kick things off with breakfast at Maple Street, then spend a relaxing day at the beach—swimming, napping, and enjoying the water. Lunch will be at Joe’s Crab Shack, followed by a quick stop back home to change before heading to dinner at River and Post.

The next day, we’ll have breakfast at home before heading to the zoo. Afterward, we’ll relax on the lanai, sipping lemonade and iced tea, then go to church and cap the evening with a movie night. The following day, we’ll sleep in, enjoy breakfast at Another Broken Egg, and spend the day shopping at Town Center.

For the rest of the week, it’ll be all about good food, plenty of rest, and trying out Topgolf. On Saturday, we’ll explore the Riverwalk, shop with local vendors, and enjoy live music. Sunday will be dedicated to church and fellowship over a Sunday dinner or we may hit up RH Rooftop and get ice cream from Malachi’s.
