We had the good fortune of connecting with Paul Mackiewicz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paul, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
As an Army Veteran and Entrepreneur, risk has been at the forefront throughout most of my career, but I honestly don’t really think about “risk” as much as I do the opportunities associated with it. I think my faith in God has a lot to do with it, as does the support system that I have built around me. Any opportunity worth pursuing is going to come with risks attached, and the fear associated with the risk is a stumbling block for most. My greatest tool for handling the fear of risk is visualizing the worst-case scenario, then determine steps I could take to mitigate it if it happened, and finally, actions I could take to repair my life if the situation occurred. Generally, the loss that comes from inaction is far worse than the potential loss from taking the risk.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The digital marketing space is a crazy fun industry to be in. The industry, however, is filled with tons of poor-performing agencies since there is no barrier of entry to start a digital marketing company. I have been doing it for 15 years and my VP of Client Success has his MBA and a degree in Marketing Management, so we had the foundation for success right from the start. With our credentials, differentiating ourselves did actually come quite easily for us because we achieved results for our clients in short order, developed amazing solutions to the biggest problems facing professional services businesses today, and we bust our butts to ensure we are performing for them at the highest levels.
At #Smart Marketing, we are best known for finally bringing order to the chaos that comes with building an online presence that generates revenue. Our eBrand Dashboard is incredibly efficient in taking the various aspects of a business’s online presence, including social media, reviews, business listings, search engine optimization, and website analytics, and empowering business owners to use them effectively.
We have a client-first attitude, not that we are solely here to perform for our clients, but that we are here to perform for our clients’ clients. Managing the online presence for an attorney or doctor means engaging with and building a community around your past clients so prospective future clients see why our client is the best option. That is how you capitalize on the Zero Moment of Truth, the point in the buying decision-making process where the consumer has identified their options and is now comparing those options to each other to determine where they will spend their money. Through the use of engaging social media content and, most importantly, positive reviews with responses, we set our clients apart from their competition.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My wife and I have lived in New York City, Miami, and now Los Angeles. Of all the places we’ve lived, Los Angeles by far has one of our favorite features, amazing and accessible hiking. We hit up Runyon Canyon and Griffith Park a few times each month. We love museums, so when we moved here, we chose an area within walking distance to LACMA, but the Getty Museum is still my favorite in LA. The Grove is an amazing place for date night, as are the fantastic restaurants around Fairfax and w3rd.
Some of the restaurants I recommend most are Animal Restaurant, Scratch|Bar & Kitchen (Sushi Bar in the back!), Genghis Cohen, République, and Osteria Mozza. When it comes to hanging out with the boys or watching football on Sundays, I am a big fan of Berkshire House or grabbing some beers at Wirtshaus German Restaurant & Beer Garden.
From what I’ve learned living here a few years now, the best way to enjoy LA is to get outside. This is why we love of rooftop bars and restaurants like The Roof Garden at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, The Rooftop by JG at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, Terra at Eataly LA, and E.P. & L.P..
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who have played important roles in my success in business and in life. My wife is my biggest cheerleader and supporter, regardless of the failures and setbacks I’ve seen. My family, especially amazing parents, and my close-knit friend group (many of my friends I’ve known over 20 years) deserve a ton of recognition for helping me become the man I am today. Lastly, God has never wavered in protecting me, inspiring me, and loving me unconditionally during my journey.
