We had the good fortune of connecting with Pejmon Noori and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pejmon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
If I have learned anything it is that the risk of not taking one outweighs the risk of taking too many. Being a small business owner is a big risk in itself. However, it is the risks taken during the daily decision making process that generate the biggest uncertainty. I have been both an employee in a large company and now a small business owner and risk analysis and decision making has been the most significant learning experience for me. When part of a large corporation the majority of decisions are made at the top tier of management, with every employee underneath left to implement said decisions. As a small business owner, every single decision is left up to me, which means every decision I make has some degree of risk to it. Whether it be product related or budgetary decisions, every time a decision needs to be made, there will be some sort of risk attached to it. I have learned that doing the research and diligence with all the info at hand will help in the decision making process. Analyzing the results of each risks is important to be prepared for the next step in the process. There is no way to absolutely know that the decision being made is going to result in the best possible outcome. However, with every day that goes by and decision that I make, I gain more experience and knowledge which will help me with future risk taking and decision making. Because of this, I feel like I am learning something knew everyday which makes every risks I take a little less risky.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Proper’s Pickle is an all-natural pickled vegetable company based out of So-Cal. We use fresh and delicious ingredients to make a pickle that is more flavorful and crunchy than the rest. Particularly, our use of Persian cucumbers for our Classic and Spicy Dill have proven to set us apart from the rest. We have always prided ourselves on this unique style and have not met another pickle company that does it like us! My brother and I started this company about 5/6 years ago as a side project at a local farmer’s market and it has slowly grown to being available in almost 100 stores through California. While it is still a side business for us, we are seeing it’s potential and hope we can continue to grow. It has been quite the learning process for us. We quickly learned that it is not as simple as just making a great product. So much more goes into a consumer product good and this industry that we never knew. We have had no previous experience in the grocery industry and were sort of building the plain as we were flying it. Every decision we made was not always the correct one but we are learning more everyday and feel like we are just starting to get the hang of it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In a pre-covid world we would be all about the amazing places to eat and drink in town. Being out of Long Beach, I feel like we got some of the best places to eat in all of LA county. So many different styles and cultures in the area make for amazing cuisine. One place I always take in town guests to is called Ramen Hub off Atlantic in Long Beach. Some of the best Ramen I have ever had. I am all about the local breweries as well and we got some really good ones here in Long Beach, like Ten Mile. One of my favorite spots is called Dutch’s Brewhouse. It has an awesome neighborhood feel and their pizzas are amazing. Not too mention they always got a good selection on draft as well as some of their own brews. Right next door is my favorite bottle shop called, Stateside Crafts. It is the perfect place to stock up on craft beers as well as locally made foods and provisions. Perfect for my out of town friends to take home as gifts. Would definitely take them out to Bixby Knolls area in Long Beach. They do a great First Friday’s at the beginning of each month that is all about music, art and local restaurants. So much fun. Also, down by the water in the Marina area. Santa Monica and Venice Beach area always great for a day trip. Walking the board walk and pier make for a fun time and great spots to stop for a bite.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A huge shoutout to our family is well deserved!!! Both immediate and extended. Blood and non-related. The family of people behind us for the last 5 or so years has been amazing. We wouldn’t be here without their support and efforts. We are still family owned/ran and realize the importance of all the people in our lives that have made this all possible.
