We had the good fortune of connecting with Porscha Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Porscha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My motivation comes from the idea of having something of my own, that I created. After graduating college in 2010, I jumped full fledge into the corporate world. Taking a career in Retail Management, I was blessed to have worked with some of the most well know and amazing brands there is. Over the past few years, I began to notice that the idea that I had been sold my entire life of “go to school, get a good job, work hard and you will be successful,” doesn’t necessarily happen that way. I started to realize that the harder I worked, didn’t necessarily mean I was getting anywhere. This started to take a toll on me mentally, especially after an unexpected break between myself and my employer of five years and six months. This is when I decided I had to change my idea of success. I thought to myself ” No more.” This mindset allowed me to think bigger than I had ever thought before. I no longer had the desire to work for anyone. I now wanted to create a brand and provide a service that would allow me to feel good about what I was doing and the individuals I wold be servicing, while being able to measure my own success. I have recently transition my business and empower women by offering lash courses and showing other female entrepreneurs how they too can start a career as a Lash Technician.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
MadamX. Cosmetics LLC is a cosmetic brand that specializes in Luxury Eyelash Extensions. Providing more than lash extensions, we believe in “Empowering Women Through Clean Beauty.” Producing products such as lipgloss, body shimmers. as well as body butters. All products are Cruelty Free and Vegan. Lets not forget the most important quality, all products are handmade. I personally take the time to place the care, attention and love needed to produce each item.
While I am now able to say that my business is becoming more successful, I have had some opportunities. One if not the biggest opportunity for me was finances. With the obligations and responsibilities of maintaining a home while finding recourses to start and run a successful business, things do start to seem a little out of reach. However, I was able to think outside of the box and really push my products and services. With the profit that I was able to obtain from doing the ground work and promoting and selling lashes and lipgloss, I was able to purchase the essential things I needed to be successful little by little.
If there was anything that I wanted people to know about my brand story is that MadamX. Cosmetics was founded on strength and faith and with those two things the universe is the limit!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I really wanted to take a friend out and show them a good time around LA, I personally would start by taking my friend to the Fairfax area. Hanging out at the museum and going to the Grove and the farmers market, is one of my favorite things to do around the city. Another place that I would absolutely have to go is Melrose, because I love shopping at wasteland. I’m really into fashion and that is a part of what drives the aesthetic behind my brand. So an amazing time for me would be a trip to the museum,a stroll around the Grove and farmers market and a pitstop to Melrose for a little shopping at wasteland!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Over the past year of having my Own business, their have been many people in my corner that have been nothing but supportive. These individuals have been the most consistent within my journey in being my number one cheerleaders. Starting with my lash model and friend “Tiffany Munoz.” The support she’s given over my journey has been amazing and I value the friendship that we created over this time. And next would have to be my faithful clients, whom are like family to me now. Due to Covid, I had to make a lot of adjustments. A lot of my networking and clientele has come from me actually doing groundwork and foot work and putting my own name out there by going to a lot of the places that I frequently shopped to promote my brand. My following is an organic following and my customers are all genuine. By create a demographic and target audience within my community and the places that I frequent, I’m always greeted with a warm welcome from each and every person who has ever purchased with me. These are the individuals that I make sure I go the extra mile for. They are also the ones who keep me motivated! And they all know who they are!
