We had the good fortune of connecting with Raleigh Tabora and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Raleigh, what role has risk played in your life or career?
To me, there are going to be risks no matter what you do in life. I think you can either be intimidated or inspired by that. We don’t know how long we have on this earth, so we might as well take a chance and bet on ourselves if we have the opportunity to do so. I think it’s better to aim high and risk falling short than to stay on the safe side and wonder if you could’ve done more if you’d just gone for it. Risk is part of the game, but it doesn’t have to stop you from playing. In my case, pursuing a career in the arts, of course there are risks involved. But, if I’m spending my life doing something that I enjoy and that brings me fulfillment- it’s worth it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m really stoked about how my little business has evolved over the last eight months; and I really I have my friends to thank for that. I’m insanely blessed to have such an encouraging group of people in my corner. They were so excited to support me; volunteering their own stuff for me to paint on, and it meant a lot. I’d say what sets me apart is that I really like personalizing what I’m making to the wearer. I ask lots of questions when someone places an order; what colors, themes, phrases they want included. Essentially, what they had in mind for the piece. I draw my inspiration from that. I love getting a feel for the person I’m creating something for and seeing where it takes me. It’s a collaboration. But, there are the occasions where I know what I want to paint and just go for it, or someone placing an order just hands me the reins and says “surprise me”. I enjoy all of it. To create something one of a kind for someone is really special to me. It’s fun to think of them walking around, living their life, wearing something that I made just for them. Something that I hope makes them feel special and confident. When art and fashion combine, I think it’s the best. Seeing people use fashion to express themselves, their taste, their individuality is so refreshing to me. And I’m always down to be a part of that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Here’s the game plan: Start the day off with hiking to the Hollywood sign to watch the sunrise and get a lil sweat on. Which leads seamlessly into breakfast at Liquid, this great acai bowl place on Melrose. We would have to drive up to Malibu for a day at the beach, then cruise around pacific palisades (the cutest little shopping area), and stop for post-beach dinner at Cafe Vida. Their chicken burrito is a life changer. The next day, I think the move would be to dress up and go to visit the Getty. Walk around and look at the art for a while and then go see a movie later that night at El Capitan Theatre.
Whenever Sunday rolls around, Melrose is a must! We meet at Alfred’s for coffee and hit the holy grail, Yeastie Boys bagel truck- once the bellies are full, we’d stroll through the farmers market. It’s one of my favorite traditions my friends and I have. Later, we would go shopping at the Americana which is this gorgeous outdoor mall with a colossal fountain where everything is lovely. On our way home we would stop at Brick & Flour to pick up some dinner, park up on Mulholland Drive and have a car picnic as we watch the sunset.
Another night we would go to dinner at Doomies, a little vegan restaurant that feels like home and tastes like heaven.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this to my dad; Roy Tabora. He’s always been my #1 supporter and mentor when it comes to anything, whether it be about art or life. He is the first person I turn to when I am unsure of my next move, and he never fails to help set me right back on track. Over the years, I’ve learned so much from watching him. His fearlessness, tenacity, and heart never fail to inspire me. I am definitely one lucky girl to get to call him my dad and best friend.
