We had the good fortune of connecting with Raychel Harrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Raychel, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success and the success of my brand is adaptability. Customer service and a great product are close seconds, but adaptivity is why I still exist as a brand. I love thinking of ways to solve problems outside the box. Suppose something comes up like it did this last year when we were forced to close for 75% of 2020. We had to reinvent how we would still have a relationship with our salon customer. How can we help them without performing hair services? What is their pain point? And what can we do to make a profit and ultimately save our business or grow our brand?
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Salon Nuuvo is a team-based Hair Salon. A ‘Team Based’ salon in California is rare. We created a codified system of excellence to better service our clientele. Our artists do not have to worry about marketing, inventory management, retail sales, paying their taxes, or the other numerous obligations that come with running your own hair business as an independent hairstylist.
We are an Eco-friendly salon and 95% waste-free! Within the team, we share our knowledge. The entire salon works collaboratively to attain excellence as a team – our clients certainly notice the difference because we are customer service oriented. Through our in-house hair academy program, we’re able to provide advanced training to our stylists, which increases their revenue over time, allowing our team members to build lasting careers within our industry.
Working behind the chair in such a collaborative environment, my approach to creating a professional haircare line was a team effort too. Listening to our guests and talented team of hairdressers allowed us to formulate our products one by one to solve problems. I’m so proud to see how far Nuuvo Haircare has come. We sell nationwide on our website and Amazon. It was born on the salon floor to solve real people’s hair problems.
Being a salon owner has its challenges. Growing a business takes grit, hard work, and the relentless passion for making a difference in someone’s life.
There is always a struggle, especially in California, and even more so during a pandemic. You have to find ways to make it work. Being adaptable and willing to change your business if need be is a must. My core values stay the same, but the world is always changing, so my business has to continually evolve as well.
I’ve learned so many lessons along the way. I didn’t go to college. I got my GED and went straight to Cosmetology school and when I was asked to be in the Warren Buffett 10k business owners accelerated college program; I was through the moon! I learned so much about business. I fell in love with my numbers. I read books and business magazines. I can always learn from anyone. Above all, it’s about the people in your organization, the product and profit come after that. It’s about the culture.
Opening my Eco-friendly salon and launching a clean hair care company, Nuuvo Haircare, truly encompasses what I’m passionate about. We build people and help them grow in our industry. And now we offer a clean product that rebuilds hair and leaves it nourished and healthy. Simply put, we are in the business of helping people feel beautiful from the inside out.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living around the Conejo Valley, I am fortunate to be around great restaurants and amazing scenery. I love the outdoors. Eating at one of the restaurants on the lake (Westlake). Hiking in Wildwood in Thousand Oaks or the trails in Malibu. I’m pretty laid back so just relaxing in my garden drinking a nice bottle of wine with friends by the fire is my favorite way to chill. Pre COVID-19. I would have to take out-of-town guests to Disneyland! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe my foundational start as a hairstylist to my Mentor, Kelly Cardenas. He saw behind the nerdy hairdresser and gave me an opportunity to assist him in the prestigious Robert Cromeans salon in Mandalay Bay Las Vegas. He managed the salon with structure and always encouraged me to be myself. He saw the magic in me before I saw it. He pushed me to limits, which I didn’t think possible. This day, if I need to ‘brain bounce’ something, he is there. I was lucky to be surrounded by so many amazing hairdressers that believed in paying it forward. This propelled me to be the entrepreneur I am today.
