We had the good fortune of connecting with Reese Salken and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Reese, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking for me makes life worth living. Taking risk is the only way I have made it to where I am in life. You will never know until you go for it. Make that risk seem like its not a risk at all. Pretend that you have. a fall back even when you do not at all. I have no plan B its only plan A so I have no choice but to take the risk because otherwise I am not going anywhere with what I wanna do in life. You gotta get out of your comfort zone as much as possible. If you feel it in your gut that it is what you should do, dont think just do it. Take the leap and just believe in yourself that everything is going to be good no matter what. My whole life has been based off taking risk and I dont get stuck on if its a risk or not i just dont make it a big deal. When I moved away from home I just pretended it was nothing major. That makes it easy

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I make music because it helps me with depression or anxiety. I love making songs because it makes me feel alive and because of connection that it gives me to people that listen to it. When I am writing a song I feel like I am standing on the edge of the world letting my soul scream. You are basically letting the world into your heart and soul, so theres is this kind of understanding of one another. I like to make my music for the misfit or the kid who never fit in. I am blessed to have great friends but I often feel like an outcast or just plain different. So i like to be a voice for the underdogs, the least likely to succeed. I also love skateboarding and the freedom it gives me to express myself. The road to get where I am today has been long and exhausting but very well worth all of the bullshit. Ive managed to enjoy myself along the way and stay positive through some of the roughest and unsure times so I am proud of that. I have learned a lot about myself and mainly to never give up. If you can dream it, it can be achieved. No matter what anyone tells you or how big your goals are. I used to day dream as a young kid in Virginia about living out in California skateboarding and making music. I never gave up because giving up was never an option.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I really enjoy cruising around West Hollywood. I like the energy over there and I find it to be an inspiring zone for me. I really like walking around all of the fashion stores on melrose as well. Theres a super creative vibe over there. I also love being at the beach as much as possible either surfing or just being in a beach town is great. When it comes to food I love going out to dinner. I love Din Tai Fung, Saddle Ranch and my local sushi spot on Hollywood Blvd. I usually take my guest to the Fairfax trading post and the Lake Hollywood Park where you can hang out in the grass under the Hollywood sign.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to my parents for being cool growing up and never forcing any thing on me and letting me follow my own path. All of my friends that have encouraged me to keep doing me and not care what anyone thinks.
