We had the good fortune of connecting with Renata Velasco and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Renata, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
You can accomplish anything, if put your mind  to it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the creator of Renstyle. I grew up in the Czech Republic, where I lived for the first twenty-two years of my life. Two years ago, I never thought that I would be designing and making leather purses or that I even had that kind of ability or creativity in me. I didn’t graduate from a fashion design school and I don’t have any formal training, yet here I am, designing and creating fashion pieces that other people appreciate and enjoy. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. It has been a difficult journey and there were many occasions when I thought that I might not be up to the task. But I knew that I had found my passion and that this was something I truly enjoyed and wanted to do and be successful at. I have always been fascinated with fashion and design and I was always especially interested in leather products because of the way they gracefully age with time. The more you wear and use leather products, the better they look and feel and the more “character they acquire– and, of course leather pieces could be part of a person’s fashion collection for years to come. When I first began making purses, I had no idea what I was doing. I watched YouTube videos and sought the guidance and advice of a few friends and acquaintances who had experience working with leather products. Other than that, I am self-taught and learned pretty much everything I know by trial and error. I ruined a lot of pieces before I got the hang of it but, eventually, my designs and creations began to take shape and turn out exactly how I envisioned them. I have never been drawn in by trendy fashions and styles of the moment that can be found in any department stores or popular brand shops. I am fascinated by unique, one-of-a-kind fashion accessories. Every piece I make must be something I would wear myself. And that is why I named my company Renstyle. It is my hope that wearing Renstyle accessories will be an expression of your own unique fashion and style.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend was visiting, the first thing I would show them in LA is actually Laguna Beach. Walk around the local art shops and beach and have a sunset dinner at the Deck. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is great and the sunsets are unforgettable there. My other favorite place is definitely Marina Del Rey, where you can paddle board during the day and then spend the rest of the day walking on Abbot Kinney Boulevard where you can get inspired by various cute designer shops. Beachside ride to Santa Monica from Venice beach is a must! Stop on the way at Venice Ale House and have a nice cold beer. My other favorite spots are ROW DTLA, Art District and Rose Bowl Flea Market is always fun to visit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes, I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my father, who, sadly, died before his time, in 2010. He was truly a “renaissance man” and I had great admiration for his creativity and many talents. He had the cooking skills of a chef; he loved to paint and created some beautiful works of art; he built his home with his own hands: and he even sewed clothes for us when we were kids. When I was a teenager, I asked my father how he had acquired so many talents and could do just about anything he put his mind to without being formally taught by anyone. His answer was enlightening and has had a great impact me on me. Even to this day, his words often echo in my mind and give me the motivation I need, especially at times when I am experiencing challenges or difficulties. He said that many people get discouraged when learning something new and they give up before they even get started; but those who have the right mindset, who believe in themselves and who persist in pursuing their dream, even when things get difficult and don’t go as planned, can learn and accomplish whatever they set out to do.
