We had the good fortune of connecting with Roberta Moradfar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Roberta, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business began when I realized how much of an integral part I played to the success of the previous company I worked for, where I began my aesthetic career. I realized that delivering quality treatments along with establishing trust and rapport with clients is what will provide longevity to any successful business. I became so busy with repeat clients and there became an increasing request for my services- that’s when I realized that I could totally have my own spa. My focus was always delivering the best care and treatment to my clients as opposed to just making sales where I was previously employed. Sales was more so their driving force and so I realized that I was no longer aligned with their vision and went with my own by creating the ideal environment not only for myself, but for my clients.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started my business purely from the love that I always had for natural beauty. Witnessing the ability to enhance features on someone to help boost their confidence and self-esteem is what makes it especially more rewarding. Being that I am a woman of color, it has been a smooth journey increasing my clientele base that consists of all ethnicities, especially those of color. I would say that my diverse clientele is what sets me apart from most practices. The part that was the most difficult was establishing my own brick and mortar in the city of Santa Monica. I was the underdog and lost to a few offers that I put in for different retail spaces against established, successful companies. That was a rather discouraging experience but I kept reassuring myself that everyone had to get their start somewhere and to not give up. When I finally got the space and location that I dreamt of, the other challenge I faced was having to bootstrap in order to start and run EFFACÈ Aesthetics. I’ve learned that everyone wants to become a business owner but no one really wants to put in the grueling work. There was a long period of time where I barely paid myself and felt like I was just winging it. It’s a really humbling experience but when you have faith in yourself, you have no choice but to place all your bets on yourself, win or lose.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well first I’d try booking for a spa day at the Four Seasons in Westlake village. Spa guests have access to the pool and can sit by the pool and order food. If its a beautiful, sunny day in LA, this is a perfect vibe! I love going to the beach so perhaps s drive out to Malibu and chilling at Paradise Cove and just watching the shore. People watching is always fun to do so sitting at any of the restaurants at Sunset Plaza in West Hollywood off of Sunset Blvd is always fun. Sushiya has always been a fun spot for me although I’m not the biggest fan of sushi. The outdoor seating allows you to watch all of the passer-bys and its always entertaining. Runyon canyon is always fun for a hike and the views always impress most that visit. A favorite, fun restaurant that places hip hop while you’re eating and vining at dinner is Tao. They have amazing lychee martinis to die for. Rooftop at the Edition is super sexy and swanky- the drinks and appetizers are so good that me and my friend ordered 2 of the same thing!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a huge shout out to all the women in my life that have invested their love and faith in me. My mother especially, who always believed that I could do anything I wanted- no matter how crazy it sounded. I have a solid set set of girlfriends that have been my ride-or-dies and have never led me astray no matter how long its been since we’ve last communicated. Many have been long friendships and the new ones that have blossomed, although short have been just as meaningful and important to me. I love a good solid tribe of positive, strong women who have done nothing but love me for who I am- the good and the bad:)
