We had the good fortune of connecting with Rogelio Nieto and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rogelio, why did you pursue a creative career?

“Since I was a kid, I knew I didn’t want to work in an office with strict schedules, so a career full of uncertainty seemed like my best option. Jokes aside, I have this need to express myself that I can only fulfill through acting or writing. It’s the most effective way I’ve found to communicate.”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career in the arts really began before I was even born. I come from a family that’s been dedicated to dance in Mexico for over 70 years, so it’s in my DNA. Of course, that hasn’t made it any easier for me. As an actor, I only started about 15 years ago, and while many of my peers already had acting experience, stepping onto the stage to portray a character was something entirely new to me. From that point on, it’s been a constant learning experience. Now that I’ve been living in L.A. for a year, I’ve had the pleasure of going through a strike, a work slowdown, and realizing that everything will be fine because, in the end, I have a lot of conviction and faith in my work. Let’s just say I’ve overcome my obstacles by embracing myself and trusting the process.
Fortunately, trusting the process has brought me good results, and less than two weeks ago, thanks to a play I wrote and performed in, I won the Best Actor award at the Brisk Theater Festival, which is held annually in the city. This shows me that hard work and persistence always pay off.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, we’re going to go hiking in the Hollywood Hills—that’s the initiation ritual to see if the city accepts you. Then, we’ll visit the neighborhood that gives the city its character and welcomed me so warmly, Boyle Heights. There, we’ll stop by a small, traditional Japanese restaurant called OTOMISAN. After that, we’ll take a stroll through the Arts District, and to wrap things up, we’ll head to the Griffith Observatory for that stunning nighttime view of the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In my story, all of my teachers have been important. Starting with my mom, who was my life and dance teacher, she taught me the discipline and professionalism that art requires. And to all my acting teachers, listening to them has shaped me into the artist I am today.
