We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Karls and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jake, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For me; I wanted to be able to have the freedom of exploring different passions. To be unapologetically myself. I grew up surrounded by entrepreneurs; My grandparents, my father and my brother. I saw them go through hard times and uncertainty and their resilience inspired me to wanna be an entrepreneur.
What should our readers know about your business?
I co-founded Mid-Day Squares in August 2018 with my sister and brother-in-law. We created the first functional chocolate bar. Imagine a chocolate bar and a protein bar had a baby but eliminated all the artificial junk (preservatives, additives and natural flavours) and used REAL plant-based ingredients. We like to say that Mid-Day Squares is what Hershey’s would be if it started in the present day. Proud: – We built a fully automated manufacturing plant (chocolate factory) that can produce 90,000 bars per day. – We sold over 2 million chocolate bars in our first 2 years. – Raised over 10 million dollars (VC + Government) – We’re a team 34 amazing people. How did we get to where you are? Was it easy? – This journey has been the hardest both physically and mentally. One thing I could say is that I am having a blast and that I am trying to cherish the entire journey. How did you overcome challenges? – One word: GRIT. Over the last 10 years I have consistently failed over and over and over again. One thing I can say is that I keep pushing forward every-time. Resilience and Grit are what allow me to overcome any challenge. What lessons have I learnt? – Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. – Be unapologetically yourself. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story? – The power of storytelling. We used authentic storytelling to build a chocolate empire.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To the the mountains… We would go snowboarding. Then we would do an Apres Ski type session. They key would be to be in nature.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Once I read the book “Delivering Happiness” about Tony Hsieh’s journey at Zappos, my mind was blown. I realized that everything in life comes down to being empathetic towards others. If you lead with empathy and always ask why, success is endless. Before making a decision I always ask why.
